A British woman has been stabbed to death during a break-in at her home in Australia.

Emma Lovell, 41,
originally from Hasketon, Suffolk, died after confronting intruders at her home in North Lakes, Brisbane, on Boxing Day night, police said.

Her husband Lee Lovell, 43, who was also stabbed, described his wife as the "glue to our family".

Two boys, aged 17, have been charged with murder.

Mr Lovell, whose injuries were non-life threatening, told reporters his family was "devastated".

"Emma was the glue to our family," he said. "She was such a beautiful person. We're all just devastated from her loss.

"It's senseless. I don't know what people do it for."

Mr Lovell, originally from Ipswich, shared photographs on social media of the family, including their two daughters, at a nearby Sunshine Coast beach on Christmas Day.

Christina Lofthouse, who has been friends with the couple for 30 years, said: "She was just the most amazing person.

"She was selfless, protective of her children, she doted on her children, mine, her nieces and nephews. They were her world.

"She was the most amazing friend, mother and wife."

Mrs Lovell "could light up a room" and "always put others before herself", said Ms Lofthouse.

'She was everything'

She has been friends with Mrs Lovell since they were aged 11 and introduced her to her husband when she was 19.

Mrs Lovell grew up in Hasketon and moved to Ipswich with her husband after they got married, Ms Lofthouse said.

She said: "She is more than just a friend, she was everything. She's more like family at that point. You pick your friends. We picked each other.

"She was there for me every single day, even from 10,000 miles away, on the phone, messaging me. We've been through it all together."

Ms Lofthouse said she had yet to come to terms with what had happened.

She said: "Lee was also stabbed as well. He didn't know [Emma had died] until later.

"I don't know how any of us are meant to enjoy Christmas ever again. My children are also devastated."

"I can't see the memories now, all I can see is my friend lying dead, lying there cold and broken," she said.

She said: "She was a hero to fight off those people, she was protecting her babies.

"They were in bed, they put the security camera on and could see two people in their house. How violated is that?"

A fundraising page set up by the local community in North Lakes for the family has raised more than 50,000 Australian Dollars (£28,079).

In a statement, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) said an altercation took place inside an address in Whitfield Crescent at 23:30 UTC and "moved outside to the front yard".

"Two offenders fled on foot prior to police arrival," it said, and "investigators, with the assistance of the dog squad, located four teenagers at a nearby location just before 04:00" on 27 December.

Two 17-year-old boys, one from Holland Park and the other Zillmere, the QPS said, were charged with one count each of murder, attempted murder and entering a dwelling with intent in company.

Both have been denied police bail and were due to appear in the Brisbane Children's Court.

A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy continue to assist police with inquiries, the force said.

Timed start, brown or black male being arrested.

The community is crying for more to be done after the youth crime crisis claimed yet another victim, with police confirming all four minors involved in the alleged fatal stabbing of a woman were known to police.

Two 17-year-olds, one from Holland Park and one from Zillmere, have been charged with murder and attempted murder.
Two others, a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, continue to assist police with inquiries.
Police have confirmed they have had prior dealings with all four boys but declined to comment on whether they were on bail at the time of the incident.

‘No place in our community for crime’

Minister for Children and Youth Justice Leanne Linard said: “This is an incredibly sad day.”
She added there was “absolutely no place in our community for crime”.
“Whether it’s a young person or an adult, the community has a right to expect to be safe and as a government we know that is one of the most important jobs that we have.
“It’s why we invest so heavily in our frontline officers and police officers.”

Linard said the government knows that young people need to be held to account.
“We made significant changes including introducing a presumption against bail last year and that has seen more young people held in detention and held for longer,” she said.
“The Youth Justice Act is clear that we have an expectation as a government that the community will be kept safe.
“The act is clear in that regard and when we made those changes last year it was to make that even clearer.
“The courts of course will apply that legislation, but as a government we are making sure the legislation is clear that the community should be kept safe.

Linard said the government will continue to act by having more police on the street.
“If a young person breaks the law they will be held to account,” she said.
“These sorts of offences should not happen and we will ensure the law is strict and strong but I cannot provide any guarantee that will mean there will never be any more crime.
“But we will do everything we can to always in our power to make sure that our absolute weight of the law comes down on people who break the law.”

Criminalising breach of bail not on the cards

When asked about the opposition’s calls to make breaching bail a crime, Linard echoed her previous statements that this would not work.
“We want to do the things to keep the community safe that do work,” she said.
“The youth justice act is very clear (that) a young person should not be released if they’re a risk to the community.
“If they commit a serious offence, the repercussions can be incredibly serious.
When asked if the government will respond to Lovell’s death with a review of their legislation, Linard said they have always reviewed the legislation to ensure that everything that should be done is being done.

‘Frustration is part of policing’

When asked if police get frustrated seeing youth offenders back in the community so quickly, Police Superintendent John Hallam said “frustration is part of policing”.
“That’s just the reality of what we deal with,” he said.
“We have a really strong bucket of laws there that we use.
“It’s a whole of community problem, this isn’t a policing problem.

Hallam said “we can’t arrest our way out of this”.
Youth justice is a “whole of community challenge”.
“We’re working together with other government agencies and the community and non-government agencies to make this a safer place (that is) better for these children.”
Earlier in the press conference, Hallam said the “whole community is mourning” after Lovell’s death.
“This is a terrible, sad day that someone’s life has been taken this way.”
Hallam said he still struggles to understand why these types of violent crime occur.
“We need to work together as a community to say no to this type of violence and also support each other when it occurs,” he said.
“We need to do something to deter people from committing these types of offences.”

Grieving husband Lee Lovell returned to the family home this afternoon, describing her death as “senseless”.
“Emma was the glue to our family,” he said.
“She was such a beautiful person. We’re all just devastated from her loss.
“It’s sort of senseless, I don’t know why people do it for.”
Earlier the Lovell family said: “We’re devastated, she was one of the sweetest people. Someone that wouldn’t hurt anyone, she was there for everybody.”

Calls for support

A GoFundMe has been organised for Emma Lovell’s husband and daughters.
“Emma leaves behind her husband Lee and two daughters, who are now faced with the unimaginable loss of their beloved wife and mother,” the GoFundMe reads.
“In this difficult time, as a community lets help support Lee and the girls as they navigate through this heartbreaking tragedy.
“Any donations, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated and will go towards helping the family with expenses during this difficult time.
“Please keep the Lovell family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

“If a young person breaks the law they will be held to account,” she said.
Sure, after you're dead.

Hallam said he still struggles to understand why these types of violent crime occur.
It is because they are BLACK.
