A Jurupa Valley man was arrested on suspicion of mayhem in the sword attack that left a homeless man’s hand severed in Riverside, police announced Saturday, May 27.
On Saturday, May 13, Riverside Police Department officers responded to an assault where the hand was located near 5th Street and Fairmount Boulevard in the downtown Riverside area.
The victim, in his 60s and locally known as Jeffery, around the same time arrived at a hospital.
Detectives arrested Stephen Daniel Dillard, a 38-year-old of Jurupa Valley, on Tuesday, May 23. He was released the next day on $55,000 bail, police said.
Police have said they believe the attacker may have had an ongoing dispute with Jeffrey.
A Saturday police news release said the investigation revealed one or more witnesses to the assault have yet to come forward; and that investigators are still seeking help from the public as they gather information on the case.

Anyone with information regarding the assault can contact Detective Melissa Brazil at (951) 353-7213 or Detective Dane Wilkinson at (951) 353-7137.
