The family of 24-year-old Cherrish Nunley, the young Jacksonville mother shot and killed in a gym parking lot Saturday, is speaking out as new details emerge about the man accused in her death. Loved ones tell Action News Jax Nicholas Brooks that not only did Nunley know the suspect, but they shared a one-year-old child.

On Thursday, U.S. Marshals and Dallas Police arrested 31-year-old Randy Campbell in Texas. Jacksonville detectives had identified him early in the investigation as the suspected gunman in Nunley’s killing.

Nunley’s sister, Justine Donaldson, said the family had long been concerned about Campbell.

“Well, I sort of had a feeling in my gut about the situation that he had something to do with it.”

Donaldson confirmed that Nunley and Campbell had been in a relationship.

“He and my sister were together from 2023, I believe, and then they had their son.”

Their son, one-year-old Preston Campbell, is now without his mother. Nunley also leaves behind her five-year-old daughter, Emma.

Nunley lived in an apartment complex across from the Chuze Fitness on Sunbeam Road, the same gym where she was shot in the parking lot. The sister said neither Nunley nor Campbell had a membership there, deepening the family’s confusion about why they ended up at that location. Donaldson also said there had been concerns about domestic violence in the relationship.

“She got to a point where she wasn’t really allowed to talk to the family, and domestic abuse started.”

As the Nunley family prepares to face their first Thanksgiving without her, they said they are determined to see justice served.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman found dead Saturday in the parking lot of a business on Sunbeam Road has been identified by her sister as 24-year-old Cherrish Nunley, a mother of two.

According to a GoFundMe account started by her sister, Nunley was killed just weeks before what would have been her 25th birthday.

She leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son, “who she loved so very much,” her sister, Justine, wrote on the GoFundMe page.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said little information is available in Nunley’s case after she was found unresponsive in a parking lot that serves several businesses on Sunbeam Road, including a fitness center and several car-related businesses.

Police said Nunley was found just after 5 p.m. Saturday and died at the scene.

Justine praised the efforts of investigators as they work to solve her sister’s case.

“Our local police are doing a great job so far,” she wrote.

Justine said the money raised in the GoFundMe will help cover the unexpected funeral expenses and care for Nunley’s children. She did not have life insurance.

“She never got into trouble. She was a bright, beautiful girl, a wonderful mom and aunt, the best sister, and a great daughter,” Justine wrote. “We will forever remember her, and she will not be another statistic. We will fight for justice. We will fight for her babies. We will fight for her.”

News4JAX is working to learn more about Nunley and her homicide case.

She was one of three adults found dead in Jacksonville over the weekend.

Another woman’s body was found Sunday under a Blanding Boulevard bridge, and a man was found dead Saturday on the side of the road on East 15th Street.
