TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - One person is dead and a suspect has been identified after a deadly Tuesday night shooting in Tifton. WALB spoke with residents in the Tift County area of Phillipsburg, who say crimes like this on their streets are almost unheard of.

On March 26, The Tift County Sheriff’s Office was called to West 21st Street on a report of a person who was killed after being shot and another person who was injured, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

When officials got to the scene, Anzley Gandy, 39, was found dead and another victim was found with injuries.

According to the GBI, the suspect, Wayne Doyle, 38, had a confrontation with a deputy who tried to arrest him.

He was arrested at the scene and charged with

  • Malice murder
  • Felony murder
  • 2 counts of aggravated assault
  • 2 counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer
  • Attempted removal of a weapon from an officer
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
Jermaine Williams, an area resident, tells WALB that his quiet community had a rude awakening when an armed man shot two innocent people.

”It’s strange and it’s crazy for him to come in this neighborhood. He’s never been over here I’ve never seen him a day in my life,”
Williams said.

He says even though the suspect is in custody he still is in complete disbelief that this could happen in his community

”That just left a lot of people startled over here because don’t nobody know his motive. Can’t nobody say? I grew up over here and out of 30 years I’ve never seen nothing like this happen,” Williams said.

He says the shooting was uncalled for and he feels for the family of the victims.

“We don’t know what this guy had going on and I feel sympathy for the family you know that lost a victim. We never had anything like that to happen,” Williams said.

Doyle is currently in the Tift County Jail.

The other shooting victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Gandy’s body will be sent to a GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
