“Our message to would-be carjackers is simple,” U.S. Attorney John Lausch said in a statement. “Committing a senseless act of violence like carjacking will earn you a home in federal prison for a long time.”
Northwestern University Medical School arrest
Trimane Kimbrough, 20, who allegedly ran from a hijacked car and hid inside a Northwestern University Medical School building in Streeterville on May 2, is charged with carjacking and using a firearm in a violent crime, officials said.

The chain of events began 90 minutes earlier when a 37-year-old man double-parked in the 2000 block of West Arthur in West Ridge as he waited for his girlfriend. He was going to drive her to work.
While he waited, a gray 2001 Saturn pulled past his car and blocked his path. Kimbrough allegedly stepped out of the Saturn’s passenger seat armed with a handgun.
Cook County prosecutors said when they filed state charges two days later that he opened the victim’s car door, held the gun to the man’s head, and told him to get out. Kimbrough allegedly punched the victim in the back of the head as he stepped from the driver’s seat.
Cops, guided by CPD’s network of license plate readers, corralled the hijacked car when it stopped for the red light on southbound Lake Shore Drive at Chicago Avenue. Kimbrough allegedly left the car in drive and ran into Streeterville. The stolen vehicle stopped after colliding with a squad car.
State prosecutors said Kimbrough received text messages as he tried to evade police inside the medical school building.
“Try to get low,” said one.
“Change yo clothes,” said another.
The police allegedly found Kimbrough’s jacket, mask, and shoes in the stairwells of the Northwestern building. Cops also found a loaded and stolen handgun on the floorboard of the hijacked car.
Kimbrough faces up to 15 years in federal prison on the carjacking count and seven years to life on the gun charge, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. If he is convicted of both counts, the sentences must be served consecutively.
Two on gun probation
The same federal charges were filed against Allen Clay, 20, and Naronn Cain, 25. They were both on probation for felony gun violations when they allegedly carjacked a couple in West Town on April 26 with a rifle and a handgun.
Just before 2 a.m., Cain and Clay allegedly approached a couple who were sitting inside a 2011 Kia Optima in the 2600 block of West Division. State prosecutors said in April that Cain pointed a rifle at the 27-year-old driver while Clay pointed a handgun at a 23-year-old woman in the passenger seat. Both carjackers were allegedly wearing black masks.
Illinois State Police intercepted the hijacked vehicle and a tail car on the Dan Ryan, according to a CPD report, but the two vehicles split up as troopers pursued them.
Police arrested Cain and Clay after the hijacked car crashed at 87th and State streets. ISP found a rifle, a handgun, and a balaclava-style facemask inside the vehicle, according to CPD records.
Cain was on probation for his second gun conviction, according to court records. He received a conditional discharge for misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon after police found a handgun in a stolen car that he exited in February 2016, according to court records.
In November, he pleaded guilty to felony unlawful use of a weapon after police allegedly found a gun under the passenger seat of a car where he reached during a traffic stop. He received a sentence of 18 months probation.
Clay also pleaded guilty to felony unlawful use of a weapon in November. He received 24 months probation. Police said they found a gun under his seat during a traffic stop.
