Charges Could Be Thrown Out in 8-Year-Old Kevin Shifflett's Brutal Murder

2015
The family of an 8-year-old boy who was brutally murdered while playing outside an Alexandria home 14 years ago is afraid his killer could walk free.

Kevin Shifflett was playing outside his great-grandmother's Del Ray home in April 2000 when police say Gregory Murphy -- 33 years old at the time -- approached Kevin and stabbed him 18 times.
Upon his arrest cops found a note that said "Kill them racist white kids anyway."

"He was a kid playing on spring break," Kevin's sister Heather Huntington told News4 this week. "He wasn't hurting anybody ... so why [was he stabbed]?"

Murphy was arrested shortly after for the stabbing, but every time he's gone to court, he has been ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Fourteen years later, doctors say Murphy cannot be made competent to stand trial in Kevin's death.

Because of that, defense lawyers want to drop criminal charges against Murphy, commit him to a mental institution and have the case handled civilly.

Huntington is scared Murphy could harm someone else if he's freed.

"This man might be set free, he might be on your street, with your child, and the same thing might happen," she said. "I know there's a lot of 'ifs' and 'maybes' but there's always that chance."

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WJLA) – It was a case that shocked the region and changed where parents let their children play. Fourteen years ago, a stranger stabbed 8-year-old Kevin Shifflett to death, as he played outside his great-grandparents’ Alexandria home.

More than a decade after the horrifying murder of her little brother, Heather Huntington is breaking her silence.

“You can’t just take a life of an innocent child and say, ‘OK, I’m cured now,’” she said.

She is afraid the man who savagely stabbed Kevin might get out of a state mental hospital for the criminally insane.

“We go to the cemetery on the anniversary date and on his birthday,” Huntington said. “I cry every time. He’s still my little brother.”

Apparently fueled by racial hatred, Gregory Murphy stabbed young Kevin 18 times and slashed his throat while he played outside. On Wednesday, Murphy’s attorneys argued he will never be competent to stand trial, and asked that he be transferred from Central State Hospital in Petersburg to a civil facility for treatment.

Prosecutors argued against such a move, citing the possibility it could lead to Murphy’s eventual release—something Huntington finds unimaginable.

“I wouldn’t be able to live,” she said. “I would live in fear; I have a son that’s the same age as my brother was when he was killed.”

The judge is expected to make a decision next week; Murphy’s lengthy rap sheet will be taken into consideration.
