LOWELL A medical assistant from a Lowell chiropractor's office faces sexual-assault charges after prosecutors say he tried to rape a male patient under the pretext of physical therapy.

Alfredo Nunez, 26, of Lowell, was released on personal recognizance after pleading innocent in Lowell Superior Court to charges of assault with intent to rape and indecent assault and battery in the Jan. 12 incident.

Prosecutor Suzanne Kontz charges that after a month of receiving treatment at the chiropractor's office, the 21-year-old patient went in for his regular appointment on Jan. 12.

But after his regular treatment, Nunez allegedly told the patient he wanted to "demonstrate&#
9;' some physical therapy he would be receiving in the future. He told the man to take off his pants and underwear. Then Nunez allegedly began probing the patient's groin area. Then Nunez allegedly

pulled away, went home and called the police, Kontz said.

When questioned later by police, Nunez admitted treating the patient but denied doing anything inappropriate, Kontz said.

The name of the chiropractor's office was not disclosed by prosecutors.

A pretrial conference is scheduled for June 17.
