HOUSTON - The 16-year-old son of Antonio Armstrong has been charged with capital murder in connection with a shooting that killed his father and his mother early Friday morning, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

The shooting happened at a two-story home in the 5300 block of Palmetto Street, near Bellaire.

Houston police told Channel 2 that Armstrong and his wife were both shot inside their home. The wife was pronounced dead at the scene. Armstrong was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head. He later died from the injury.

The 16-year-old son of former Miami Dolphins linebacker Antonio Armstrong has been charged with murder for allegedly killing his parents in the bedroom of their Houston home, authorities said.

The Friday shooting left friends and relatives of the slain couple, both 42, stunned.

“There was nothing left out. There was no neglect or anything, nothing that could even possibly justify the situation,” wife Dawn Armstrong’s cousin, Vaun Lee, told Houston’s ABC 13.

“This makes no sense. No sense.”

Antonio and Dawn also had a 20-year-old son and a younger daughter, both of whom were reportedly home during the shooting but were unharmed, the Washington Post reported.

Police responded to a 911 call that the 16-year-old boy made after 1 a.m., the Houston Chronicle reported.

Investigators found a note that read, “I’ve been watching you,” next to the gun allegedly used in the shooting, but a motive was still not known.

“This was an outstanding family. The male of the family was an absolute hardworking breadwinner,” Houston police homicide Investigator Jimmy Dodson said, according to NBC 2.

“He was an associate pastor in the area church. He’s a great guy. The mother was apparently a great mother, according to family members. Like I said, it was kind of the all-American family.”

The Armstrongs ran a popular gym called First Class Training in nearby Bellaire.

Antonio was an all-American linebacker at Texas A&M before playing briefly for the Dolphins in 1995.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Antonio Armstrong and his family, his old teammates and the entire Aggie family,” Texas A&M Coach Kevin Sumlin said in a statement.

TEXAS TRUE CRIME: Only on ABC13, an in-depth documentary seven years in the making. After three trials, AJ Armstrong is now serving his life sentence for the murders of his parents at a prison in Abilene, Texas. C...

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- In the early morning hours of July 29, 2016, A.J. Armstrong walked into his parents' bedroom and shot them to death, in their southwest Houston home. Armstrong was 16 years old at the time.

For seven years, Armstrong and his team fought to show he was not the killer. He first shared his story with

Eyewitness News in 2018, claiming an intruder killed his parents. He saw the "masked man" run from the scene.

Armstrong's first two capital murder trials ended with hung juries, but in August 2023, a third jury convicted Armstrong of capital murder.
This case captivated a city, with twist after twist in the investigation.

Now, for the first time, and only on ABC 13, you'll hear from witnesses pivotal in putting Armstrong in prison, the former detective who interrogated the teen hours after the murders, and the bloodstain pattern analyst who explained how Armstrong committed the murders.

You'll hear Armstrong's own words: his 911 call and police interview, and see how prosecutors transformed the courtroom into the crime scene during trial.

We'll walk you through what prosecutors argued Armstrong was doing on his phone in the minutes leading up to the murders, and why they say Armstrong's iPhone activity fit with the home security system records "like a puzzle," proving he was the killer.

Armstrong's family has supported him from day one, believing he is innocent.

Armstrong, now 23, is serving life in prison in Abilene, Texas at the Robertson Unit, west of Dallas. It's a six-hour drive from his wife and young son in Houston.

He's appealing his conviction. Armstrong will be 63 years old when he's up for parole in 2063.

When Dawn and Antonio Armstrong were shot inside their Houston, Texas, home on July 29, 2016, no one ever expected it to be the result of familial drama, but that is apparently what it was. After all, as explored in ABC’s ’20/20: I Have Been Watching’ and ’20/20: All American Murder,’ their then 16-year-old son Antonio “AJ” Jr. was the one behind their brutal double homicide. Yet for now, if you simply wish to learn more about the individual who has truly stood by him through it all — his long-term partner, Kate Ober — we’ve got the essential details for you.

Who is Kate Ober?

It was reportedly around the late spring of 2014 when Kate first got involved with AJ, just for them to soon fall head over heels despite the fact they were merely making their way into high school. Their romance was thus filled with petty lies, school theatrics, as well as needless tumultuousness, all of which the blonde beauty actually testified to during his initial 2019 capital murder trial. However, she also proudly maintained they “were like every teenage couple. We fight sometimes; we’re growing up; we’re learning; we’re becoming people… our relationship is happy and good.”

Though, upon being asked, one of the first things then-Cinco Ranch High School senior Kate attested to was the kind of bond her boyfriend shared with his devoted, happily married parents. She expressed that Dawn and Antonio were AJ’s “best friends” before insisting the latter was “just happy, goofy” even in the days leading up to the tragic incident, indicating no foul play from him. Yet the fact he had argued with her a day prior over a false rumor regarding infidelity and his several lies throughout their close affinity (by July 2016) did paint a much different picture of the teen.

According to court records, in the text messages between the young couple, Kate had not only accused AJ of never telling her the truth, but she had also condemned his drug habit. In fact, she once told him she had an issue with the amount of marijuana he was using/selling prior to briefly breaking up with him because he’d lied about the reason he’d switched schools. AJ had told his girlfriend he wanted to play football at the new place, yet the truth is he had to leave Kinkaid School owing to poor grades — a lie Kate genuinely despised since she believed she could’ve helped.

Kate Ober is Working as a Model Today

Despite everything AJ admittedly put her through as well as the accusations against him, Kate had decided to stick by long ago due to the simple fact she honestly believes in him and their love. It hence comes as no surprise that they are still together and she’s trying to build a good, happy, healthy life in their home state of Texas, all the while doing her best to support him in jail. AJ was convicted of murder following his third trial in the summer of 2023, yet she gladly continues to be his partner, especially as they are now married parents – they welcomed a son in late 2020 and tied the knot in early 2023.

Coming to Kate’s professional experiences, as per the last reports, she is currently living her childhood dream and working as a model with the unwavering goal of establishing a name for herself in the entertainment industry. From what we can tell, the former high school cheerleader loves her relatively new role as a mother and her work, so she will probably continue to juggle them both for as long as possible.

“People are always going to talk and assume things about your life, but I must always remember my family and closest friends know what’s going on and they love and support me,” Kate once said, making it clear that sometimes you just need some structure and self-confidence to thrive in life. “The world will always try to tell you to be this or that, but do not forget who you are as a person and what your values are in this life. Let no one stop you or limit you, and definitely don’t let your fears of failure get in the way!”

Never underestimate how powerful the radical JFK/LBJ government racial 'integration' psychological mind war's programming was for DESEGREGATION, which truly does dumb down White children in more ways than one, as Kate's story proves just how brainwashed into self-destructive racial stupidity she really was before 2014, and she still is.
