SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Indiana Civil Liberties Union asked a judge who ordered officials to remove a Ten Commandments display from an Elkhart County office building to force the county to pay the group's legal expenses.

Even if U.S. District Judge Robert Miller Jr. approves the ICLU's $19,600 claim, the organization is unlikely to collect immediately because the county plans to appeal the ruling against the display.

Miller last month ordered the county to remove the display, which also included copies of the Magna Carta and other documents. He said the U.S. Constitution forbids a government to post the Ten Commandments in a gov
rnment building.

Liberty Counsel of Orlando, Fla., which is representing the county, likely will file a rebuttal characterizing the ICLU fees as excessive, said Bob Weaver of Shipshewana, one of the

Liberty Counsel,
a nonprofit organization specializing in cases involving religious rights, abortion and family issues, has agreed to represent the county at no cost.
