Cary, N.C. — An 18-year-old from Cary was arrested Thursday for allegedly trying to drown a dog when he didn't have enough money to put it down or enough gas to get to the SPCA.

Authorities said that Jahmal Clark, of 1108 Alston Village Lane, wanted to put down a 4-month-old Shepherd mix puppy because he didn't have enough money to take care of it. Clark brought it to the vet to be put down, but didn't have $100 to pay for the procedure. He thought about bringing the dog to the SPCA but didn't have gas to get there, authorities said
.

Clark duct-taped the dog's muzzle and paws, and threw it in the lake at his apartment complex in an attempt to drown it, police said.

A passerby saw Clark throw the dog in the lake and called police. Officers got there in time to rescue the dog.

Clark was charged with felony cruelty to animals and placed in the Wake County Jail.

A suitable family adopted the dog, police said.
