Man charged in kidnapping, rape

CHAPEL HILL -- Police charged a Durham man with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, assault inflicting serious injury, common-law robbery and financial card theft on Sunday.

The charges stemmed from an alleged assault that occurred on Saturday morning on North Columbia Street.

Police charged Demario Douglas Carrington, 23, of 3407 Angier Ave., Durham. He was being held under a $100,000 bond at the Orange County Jail.

"I didn't do it," Carrington said Monday morning during a video first appearance in front of District Court Judge Joe Buckner in Hillsborough.

A 23-year-old Durham woman was walking alone on South Columbia Street at about 3:30 a.m. en route to a friend's house when a man drove up next to her near Stinson S
treet, said Jane Cousins, spokeswoman for the Chapel Hill Police Department.

The man grabbed her and pulled her inside his car, Cousins said.

Cousins said it wasn't clear to her whether the assault occurred where the man forced her into the car, or whether he drove a short distance before assaulting her. He raped her and punched her in the face, then forced her out of the car, Cousins said. When he drove away, he left with her purse. The victim suffered a split lip from the punch.

The woman was able to get the license number and a description of the car, and when she reached her friend's house, she called 911 and gave police the information.

"She went to the hospital for evidence collection and some injuries," Cousins said.

Police found Carrington in Durham and brought him back to Chapel Hill, where he was charged on Sunday morning in connection with the attack, Cousins said.
