An arrest has been made in a hit-and-run, chain reaction crash that killed a husband and wife.

Shekhroz Mamaatkulov, 25, of Warrington, Pennsylvania, was arrested Monday. He's charged in a crash that killed Carmen Ruiz, 48, and her husband, Juan Lopez Rivera, 50.

Ruiz and Rivera were inside a 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor traveling on Bustleton Avenue and Red Lion Road on April 20, shortly before midnight.

Police say Mamaatkulov was driving a 2019 Chevy Camaro down Bustleton Avenue at a high speed at the same time and crashed into a 2010 Lexus that was stopped at a red light. Mamaatkulov tried to speed away but then collided with the couple’s Endeavor, setting off a chain-reaction crash involving three more vehicles, police said.

Suspect Flees in Getaway Car After Causing Deadly Crash

Mamaatkulov then left his vehicle and was picked up by a white Lexus which fled the scene, according to investigators.

Ruiz and Rivera both died from their injuries. Five people in the other vehicles, including two children, had non-life-threatening injuries.

Police identified Mamaatkulov as the hit-and-run driver and located him at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody. He's expected to be charged with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle, and recklessly endangering another person.

“Come and say, at least, ‘I’m sorry.’ I lost my parents,” the couple’s daughter, Cynthia Lopez, said. “They were my life.”

Rivera worked as a handyman for a family business. Family members showed NBC10 video of Ruiz and Rivera dancing at a relative’s birthday party hours before the deadly crash. They said they knew there was a problem when the couple didn’t return their text messages.

“They was the best,” Ruiz’s sister, Veronica Navarro, told NBC10. “They was wonderful people. Innocent.”

A family is mourning a young boy who was struck and killed by an unlicensed driver while he was walking across a highway in South Jersey with his grandmother.

Marco Yu, 7, his 71-year-old grandmother and his 3-year-old brother were crossing White Horse Pike in Egg Harbor City near Buffalo Avenue on Wednesday around 8:45 p.m.

As they were walking, Yu and his grandmother were struck by a pickup truck. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene while his grandmother was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries that are considered life-threatening. Yu's younger brother was not hurt.

Ines Ramirez lives near the scene of the crash and witnessed the aftermath.

"When I seen them put the blanket on the little boy, that just makes me choke up so bad," she said.

Prosecutors identified the driver as 30-year-old Jorge Rodriguez of Horsham, Pennsylvania. He was released after being charged with being an unlicensed driver involved in a fatal crash. He was also ticketed for not having a license. It wasn't known Thursday if he retained an attorney.

"No driver's license," Nicole Ren, Yu's mother, said while in tears. "Why are you driving the car?"

Yu's family owns a restaurant in the area. Yu, his grandmother and brother had visited a grocery store shortly before the crash.

"I have a baby," Ramirez said. "To think that they're just going to the grocery store and not coming back, it was so sad."

Yu's family insisted he knew how to safely cross a street.

"He's a very, very good boy," Yu's aunt, Paris Ren, told NBC10. "He knows everything. Sometimes [on a] red light I go. He says, 'Auntie, don't go.'"

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the crash and wants to hear from anyone who witnessed it.

A woman was fatally hit by a drunk, speeding driver who drove his car onto the sidewalk in the Bronx over the weekend, cops said Wednesday.

Francisco Rosario, 29, was allegedly driving drunk and speeding in a Nissan minivan on Jerome Avenue in Norwood shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday when he swerved and lost control of the vehicle, according to police.

Rosario hopped the curb near Bainbridge Avenue, barreling into a pole and then two people — Natasha Mar, 33, and a 49-year-old man as they were waiting at a bus stop, cops said.

Mar suffered injuries throughout her body and was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital unconscious, but she died on Monday, cops said.

The second victim was also taken to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police arrested Rosario, who lives in Morrisania, at the scene and charged him with assault, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic device, driving while ability impaired and refusal to take a breath test, cops said.

An unlicensed, drunk driver who hit and killed a co-worker at a construction site — pinning his colleague to a wall with his van — in Brooklyn last year has been sentenced to up to nine years behind bars, prosecutors said.

Leonel Ortega-Flores pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in Brooklyn Supreme Court earlier this month and was sentenced Thursday to three to nine years in prison.

“This defendant’s recklessness in drinking and driving took the life of a beloved man who was a husband, a father and a brother,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez afterwards.

“The defendant’s actions changed the lives of his victim’s devastated family forever, leaving them heartbroken. He has now been held accountable for this senseless death.”

Ortega-Flores, 36, had downed four or five Coronas and didn’t have a license when he tried to park a van at his job site on 21st Street near Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park on June 30.

He instead hit the gas and drove onto the sidewalk, striking fellow laborer Jose Cardoso, 32, and pinning him up against the wall of a warehouse, authorities said.

Cardoso was taken to a hospital but couldn’t be saved.

Ortega-Flores tried to run away from the crash, returning to his home in the Bronx, where he was arrested later that night, prosecutors said.

The teen who allegedly blew through a red light and caused a wreck that killed a 52-year-old cyclist was arrested Wednesday — more than a week after the horrifying incident.

Cops collared Mirza Baig, 18, of Queens and threw the book at him — slamming him with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, vehicular assault, criminal facilitation, disobeying a traffic device and speeding, among a total 11 charges.

Baig allegedly flew through a red light in his gray Dodge sedan at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Avenue L in Midwood on Aug. 11, striking a blue Honda SUV and sending it careening into Jose Alzariz, who was approaching the crosswalk on his bicycle.

Alzariz was the 19th cyclist killed in the city this year.

Baig was arraigned in Brooklyn criminal court on Wednesday, where his lawyer Jeffrey Lewisohn repeatedly insisted the killing was an “accident.”

“He was in an accident. A tragic accident. And now it’s got criminal charges,” Lewisohn said. “It’s not appropriate.”

Baig posted a $10,000 cash bail and was expected to be released Wednesday afternoon.

His next court date is Oct. 23.

A Brooklyn man was hit with manslaughter charges Tuesday for allegedly fatally hitting a motorcyclist while speeding and driving drunk — then trying to pass the blame onto his girlfriend by claiming she was behind the wheel, prosecutors said.

Christopher Diaz, 24, was arraigned in Brooklyn Supreme Court, where he pleaded not guilty to 17 counts, including second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminally negligent homicide as well as conspiracy charges over the collision in the early morning hours of May 27.

Diaz was driving a 2014 Infiniti sedan, registered to his girlfriend, at 80 mph in a 25-mile an hour zone on Ocean Parkway in Kensington when he slammed into 28-year-old Evvon Alexander at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Beverly Road, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

The car hit Alexander so hard that it split his motorcycle in half, and the force threw him over a median and into parked cars on an adjacent service road, the DA said.

The rider was rushed to a hospital, but could not be saved.

Diaz’s girlfriend, Jasmin Morales-Cruz, 23, initially took the fall for the fatal crash, telling police that she had only one drink while Diaz had numerous drinks.

Two passengers in their car initially backed them up in their ruse, but days later admitted that it was actually Diaz behind the wheel — and he copped to drinking six to eight beers, the DA said.

The DA’s office said it conducted a “lengthy” investigation into the incident that turned up surveillance footage of the group hitting three bars and Diaz hopping into the driver’s seat prior to the collision — as well as text messages in which the passengers were asked to lie to police.

Other evidence showed that Diaz allegedly sped up from 65 mph to 83 mph just moments before the collision.

Morales-Cruz also faces obstruction and conspiracy charges.

Diaz’s bail was set at $400,000 bond or $200,000 cash and he was ordered to return to court on Sept. 23.

He faces five to 15 years behind bars if convicted of the top count.

Driver who killed Brooklyn boy on bicycle never applied for driver’s license
By Craig McCarthy

victor-majia.jpg

A 29-year-old motorist accused of fatally mowing down a Brooklyn boy on his bicycle had previously lost his license and never applied for a new one, court papers show.

Victor Mejia was arrested Saturday morning after he struck 10-year-old Dalerjon Shahobiddinov while the boy rode with the light in the crosswalk on Foster Avenue in Kensington around 10:30 a.m., according to police.

The unlicensed driver had turned left in his 2002 Ford Explorer onto Foster Avenue after the light turned green on Seton Place when he felt a bump, according to a criminal complaint.

Mejia “got out, and then the defendant saw Dalerjon Shahobiddinov in the roadway and that Shahobiddinov’s bicycle was underneath the defendant’s vehicle,” court papers said.

Cops took Majia into custody at the scene.

According to court papers, his license was previously suspended, and he never paid to have it reinstated. It wasn’t clear why his license was suspended.

Mejia appeared in court in Brooklyn on Sunday and was released without bail on charges including failing to exercise due care while driving and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He is next due in court Nov. 4.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) — The suspect wanted in a deadly hit-and-run that killed a Vietnam veteran in Norristown has been arrested. Norristown police announced the arrest of 31-year-old Nemias Perez Severiano on Wednesday in connection to the death of 69-year-old Samuel Jackson.

Severiano is charged with accidents involving death as well as counts relating to allegations that he did not even have a license.

Court records show that prior to fatally striking Jackson, Serviano was at a local bar for five hours.

Serviano’s arrest papers allege, “While at the bar [Severiano] indicated he consumed seven to eight Modelo beers. He informed the detectives that when he left the bar, he was ‘a little drunk.’ Severiano stated he made a stop at Oak and Astor Street and after I turned onto Astor Street, I heard a noise.”

The fatal hit-and-run happened just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday at West Oak and Astor Streets, when Jackson had just gotten out of his car in front of his home.

Jackson was left to die with his family tearfully saying that he was just left there “like a dog.”

Jackson was a Marine and a veteran of the Vietnam War.

His funeral service will be on Saturday in Paoli.

His sister Peggy Jackson says it will be a celebration.

“I have closure but even when it happened, in my heart, I knew they were going to get him. I knew it was just a matter of time once the media stepped in,” she said. “I can’t thank you guys enough for giving my brother attention and putting it out there. You can run, but you can’t hide.

“My heart is broken, but I know my brother’s in a better place. I know he didn’t suffer. I can’t imagine what his last words were, but at the end of the day, it’s about him and giving him a good burial. I can’t wait until Saturday. I can’t even sleep because I know what is coming.”

An elderly Staten Island bicyclist was hit and killed by an unlicensed pickup truck driver, police said.

Zudi Daci, 79, suffered severe head trauma after being struck at the intersection of Arlene Street and Signs Road in the Bulls Head section at about 8:20 a.m. Friday, authorities said. He later died at Richmond University Medical Center.

Biker crashes after NYPD cop put up barricade in his path
By Tina Moore and Craig McCarthy
May 28, 2020 | 12:14pm

NYPD cops sent a guy flying off his motorbike when they threw a barricade in his path at the last second on a Bronx exit ramp, new video shows.

The wild encounter occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Sunday when cops were called to Bronx River Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard for reports of motorcycles carelessly zipping through Soundview, according to the NYPD.

A short clip posted to Instagram shows three cops rushing to stretch a barricade across the Bronx River Avenue exit ramp moments before the motorcyclist bails from his green bike — gets up and runs.

The 27-year-old Benjamin Gonzalez only made it a few feet before bumping into a fellow biker and walks back to surrender to cops.

“Yo, bro, you good! What they’re doing right here is illegal, bro!” the man filming the incident yells out.

A spokeswoman for the NYPD said, “officers moved the barrier across the roadway to narrow the flow of traffic, allowing them to engage cyclists who were operating their bikes in an unsafe manner. In this instance, one of the riders continued at a high rate of speed, attempting to breach the opening in the barrier.”

Gonzalez was taken to a nearby hospital for an evaluation but was uninjured in the fall, cops said.

The biker faces charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving and aggravated unlicensed operator, according to the NYPD.

Two NYPD cops busted in the Bronx for domestic assault, drunk driving
By Amanda Woods and Tina Moore
November 20, 2020 | 12:39pm

Two NYPD officers were arrested in the Bronx this week — one for an assault on his live-in girlfriend, and the other for driving while intoxicated after she showed up for work under the influence, according to police.

Officer Ramon Castro, 33, was busted around 3:30 a.m. Friday for allegedly grabbing his live-in girlfriend by the ears during an argument at his home in the confines of the 48th Precinct, which covers Belmont, East Tremont, and West Farms.

Castro, who works in Patrol Borough Manhattan North and has been with the NYPD for 9 years, was charged with assault, cops said.

His girlfriend was not hospitalized, police said.

A day earlier, Officer Kerry Badala, 38, was drunk when she showed up for work at the Edenwald satellite office of PSA 8 on East 229th Street, authorities said.

A sergeant noticed that she had alcohol on her breath, bloodshot eyes, was unsteady on her feet and had slurred speech, according to police sources.

Police determined that she drove to work in her personal vehicle while intoxicated, arriving just before 3 a.m., the sources said.

She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated about two hours later.

Badala has been with the department for 13 years.

Both Castro and Badala were suspended without pay following their arrests, as is NYPD policy.
