LOGAN HEIGHTS — An animal cruelty investigation is underway following the poisoning deaths of eight dogs in a Logan Heights mobile home park over the weekend.

Officers from the San Diego Humane Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to a call at the El Rey Trailer Plaza Saturday and found five dead dogs, authorities said.

They returned to the area on Sunday to search for suspects and discovered three more poisoned canines, Humane Society spokeswoman Kelli Herwehe said Monday.

All of the dogs lived in the enclosed mobile home park on 47th Street near Market Street and were often allowed to roam the fenced-in area, Herwehe said. The dogs belonged to different owners. Information on the various breeds was not immediately available.

Medical staff were performing necropsies on the dogs Monday in an effort to determine what kind of poison was ingested and how.

“The severity of the animals’ conditions leads us to believe that this is a case of intentional animal cruelty,” Randy Lawrence, director of investigations for the Humane Society, said in a statement Monday.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Tips can be reported anonymously through (888) 580-8477 or sdcrimestoppers.com.

Leads can also be reported to the Humane Society at (619) 243-3466 or sdhumane.org.
