Five charged in shootout, drug case

Federal prosecutors announced indictments Friday against five Kansas City men in two cases related to an Aug. 7 shooting that critically wounded a Kansas City police officer.

Bryan K. Walker, 21, and Kyle A. Gardenhire, 23, were charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and possessing several firearms in a drug-trafficking crime.

Police arrested Gardenhire and Walker in the 7000 block of Myrtle Avenue after they had attempted to flee from officers. In a videotaped interview with police, Walker later acknowledged firing the shots that wounded an officer, prosecutors said.

In a related case, Demetrius A. Briggs, 23, Montae T. Robertson, 19, and Dion D. Spriggs, 23, were charged with conspiring to distribute crack cocaine and possessing firearms during a drug trafficking crime. Spriggs also is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities arrested the men later on Aug. 7 after a chase north on Prospect Avenue. A fourth man, Deandre T. Clay, 21, later died of a gunshot wound to his back inflicted by an officer in a pursuing vehicle.
