(MOBILE, Ala.) Mar. 21 - A Mobile man once in charge of supervising teens in trouble with the law now finds himself on the other side of the justice system, accused of sodomizing one of his charges.

Adric Bush, who was once responsible for working with teens in Mobile's juvenile justice is now a defendant in Mobile circuit court.

He's being charged with sodomy, enticing a minor and providing a minor with alcohol, said Edmund Naman, Mobile County as

sistant district attorney.

Bush allegedly met his young victim at the Strickland Youth Center, where he had worked a
s a detention officer for a couple of years.

That is where he developed a relationship, added Naman. He carried that relationship outside of the Youth Center, and he's accused of sodomizing and enticing a child based on his contacts at the Youth Center at his home."

The alleged incident in this week's trial took place in December 2003, involving a then 14-year-old boy who had served time at Strickland.

Also taking the stand on Monday was another juvenile offender who told jurors Adric Bush also took him to his house on several occasions in 2003, testifying that two of those times, Bush sodomized the then-twelve year-old boy and forced him into oral sex.

"t's a case we contend is simply false accusation, said Tim Fleming, Bush's defense attorney. "'m not real sure what the motives are behind it. I'
m st
ill looking for that. We're pretty confident in our case.

Bush's defense attorney says he is also confident that he'll have as ma
ny as 35 witnesses ready to take the stand on Tuesday to vouch for his client's character.

Their anticipated message: "There's just no way"â┚¬Ã…¡ÃƒÆ’”šÃ”š¦ just no way this happened, said Fleming.

The prosecution is also hoping to offer expert testimony on behavioral patterns of sex abuse victims and perpetrators. So far, the defense is objecting to the use of that witness, saying she does not meet the criteria for an expert witness.

On Tuesday, the defense will have its opportunity to call witnesses on behalf of Adric Bush. If found guilty on the sodomy charge, he would face a sentence of ten years to life in prison.

Youth center defendent denies sexual conduct

Former Strickland Youth Center detention officer Adric Lashaun Bush -- accused by two young, one-time residents of the center of sodomizing them in the bedroom of his home -- told a jury Tuesday that he was innocent and several witnesses were liars.

Bush, 27, began his lengthy testimony by weeping over his predicament.

Bush's testimony followed a string of character witnesses Tuesday who variously described him as "awesome" and "a very fine fellow," a hard-working "people person" who even as a teenager loved working with youngsters.

Another, shorter string of former residents and other youths testified that while he spent time, money and energy on them, he never sho

wed the side described by two accusers, who were 12 and 14 when, they
said, Bush lured them into various degrees of sodomy.

Bush is on trial this week in the case of the 14-year-old's accusations, but both boys swore Monday that he took them to his San Juan Drive home in Mobile in late 2003 and attacked them sexually.

Official charges involving the older boy include enticing a child for immoral purposes, furnishing alcohol to a minor and first-degree sodomy. If convicted, Bush faces a five-year maximum on the first two and 10 years to life for sodomy.

The 12-year-old testified that one sexual encounter occurred in a moving car as Bush sat the boy on his lap behind the wheel. As the child steered, according to his testimony, Bush worked the gas and brake pedals while fondling the boy through his clothes.

The younger boy, now 13, was not in court Tuesday. The older one, now 16, sat with his mother in the courtroom gallery. Several of Bush's character wit
ness
es were not so kind to his accuser, describing him as a constant troublemaker who excelled at
manipulation.

As Bush answered questions from his Mobile attorney, Tim Fleming, the teenager often shook his head in disagreement at what the defendant was saying and ducked his head when Bush broke down in tears as he talked about his friends and family.

During cross-examination by prosecutors, Bush admitted taking the teen to his home on a December night in 2003, agreed that it was not only wrong but against the youth center's rules, but claimed the boy was desperate, had just run away from home. Bush said he took the youngster to his house to counsel him.

Why then, Assistant District Attorney Edmond Naman asked him, did Bush simply start playing video games when he got home, never made a personal effort to let the boy's mother know where he was and allowed the boy to go to his bedroom to watch television, as he had earlier claimed during direct examination by his lawy
er?

What happened to the counseling, Naman asked Bush.

Monday, the accuser told jurors he was d
ownstairs playing video games when Bush called him to his bedroom, showed him a gun, made implied threats with it, then sexually assaulted him.

Bush's cross-examination by the prosecution is set to resume today in Mobile County Circuit Judge Herman Thomas' courtroom.

Former detention officer convicted of sodomy

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A jury Wednesday convicted a former juvenile detention center officer of sodomy involving boys at the Strickland Youth Center in Mobile.

The Mobile County jury deliberated for about two hours before returning a guilty verdict for Adric Lashaun Bush, 27, who maintained his innocence. He could be sentenced to 10 years to life in prison in May.

Two boys, 12 and 14, accused Bush of sodomizing them in the bedroom of his home.

In tearful testimony Tuesday, Bush called his accusers liars.

Bush was on trial in the case of the 14-year-old's accusations, but both boys swore Monday that he took them to hi
s home in late 2003 and attacked them sexually.

Official charges involving the older boy include enticing a child for immoral purposes, furnishing alcohol to a minor and first-degree sodomy.

During cross-examination by prosecutors, Bush admitted taking the teen to his home on a December night in 2003, agreeing that it was not only wrong but against the youth center's rules, but claimed the boy was desperate and had just run away from home. Former guard at youth center found guilty of sodomy

He was described by prosecutors Wednesday as a man with two faces -- one smiling as he helped young and troubled boys find their way through adolescence, the other a predator demanding that they submit to him sexually.

Shortly after this description, Mobile County prosecutors asked jurors in the trial of Adric Lashaun Bush, a former detention officer with the Strickland Youth Center, to find him guilty of all three counts against him -- first-degree sodomy, furnishing alcohol to a minor and enticing a child for immoral purposes.

After deliberating for two hours, that was the verdict -- guilty -- delivered to a crowded, partisan courtroom, with more than a dozen of Bush's relatives and frien

ds nervously awaiting the decision.

When the verdict was announced, Bush, 27, began weeping almost uncontrollably, as did most of his supporters. The cries rose to wails. Women had to be helped from the courtroom. Men abruptly stood up, marched out, slamming the courtroom doors open as they went.

Still weeping, Bush, who had been out on bail since his January 2004 arrest, was led off to jail.

Circuit Judge Herman Thomas, who presided over the grueling, emotional trial that began Monday, set Bush's sentencing date for May 6.

Bush faces a maximum of five years each for the lesser charges and 10 to life for first-degree sodomy.

Jurors earlier this week heard from two teenagers. One, now 13, testified that Bush lured him to his San Juan Drive home in late 2003 where, in a bedroom, he ordered him to drop his pants and face the wall.

The other teen, now 16, was 14, he tol
d ju
rors, when Bush sodomized him in December 2003, calling out his name over and ove
r
, in exactly the same bed.

In January 2004, the older teenager told relatives about the incident and Bush was arrested.

During an unusually lengthy stretch on the witness stand over two days, Bush attempted to explain away numerous discrepancies in his stories countering the boys' claims while trying to explain spending so much time with young men with whom contact in his position as an officer and counselor was strictly prohibited.

He branded as liars his accusers as well as his former supervisors and colleagues at the center and a juvenile psychiatric facility. The latter two groups had earlier testified about numerous write-ups and reprimands he received for immature and unacceptable behavior while on the job.

At one crucial point in the trial, Bush admitted to jurors that he once lied to a supervisor at
the psy
chiatric facility while at work after receiving a call from the 14-year-old suggesting they get together.

What
he did not know was that the call was being recorded by police.

Bush sounded enthusiastic about a rendezvous and in order to carry it off told his supervisor that his girlfriend was deathly ill and he needed to rush to her side.

Bush's Mobile attorney Tim Fleming described his client in a closing argument as "a victim of his own kindness" who tried too hard to help troubled youngsters.

Assistant District Attorney Edmond Naman said of him, "This is a very, very, very bad man ... with two faces, the soft spoken Adric Bush and the 'pull your pants down and face the wall' Adric Bush.'"

Bush was the classic sexual juvenile predator, Naman said, who would groom his victims "and soften t
hem up"
before attacking them.
