In Superior Court in Morristown Monday, Assistant Prosecutor John McNamara Jr. said that Khalif Thomas, 23, of Newark, has now joined his three relatives as a defendant in the FuncoLand homicide case. According to the prosecution, Khalif Thomas supplied the murder weapon allegedly used by his brother, Omar S. Thomas of Irvington, to murder store employees Eric Rewoldt and Jeffrey Eresman.
According to the prosecution, Khalif Thomas was charged on March 17 with unlawful possession of a weapon and with hindering apprehension. The arrest came following allegations made by Khalif Thomas cousin, Craig Allen Thomas Jr., 17, who has already pleaded guilty to participating in the double homicide. Police allege that
Omar Thomas, Craig Allen Thomas Jr. and Rahman Vaughn, 26, of Newark, entered the FuncoLand store, which was formerly located in the Roxbury Mall on Route 10, with the intent to steal video game systems and equipment. Ultimately, more than $10,000 worth of games and equipment were stolen. The prosecution claims that Omar Thomas was familiar with the FuncoLand store because he delivered ice cream periodically to a nearby business. They say he was joined by his two cousins in an attempt to rob the store, and say it was Omar Thomas who pulled the trigger, killing both Rewoldt and Eresman.
Both Craig Thomas and Vaughn have pleaded guilty to murder, robbery and conspiracy and, authorities say, have been cooperating with the prosecutors office in the prosecution of Omar Thomas as the trigger man. According to McNamara Jr., Khalif Thomas is not being accused of any role in the shootings or the robbery. But, he is accused of unlawfully owning the five-shot revolver that was used in the shootings. Authorities have been unable to recover the murder weapon.
