Cops nab JP bedroom intruder

A homeless man who attacked a Jamaica Plain woman after sneaking into her home and hiding in her bedroom was nabbed by police before he could even leave the house - thanks to a 911 call by the woman's roommate, police said.

``The roommate heard her screaming and dialed 911. He was coming out of the house as officers were going in,'' said Sgt. Detective Thomas Maloney of the department's Sexual Assault Unit.

Lateef O'Neal, 24, entered the 27-year-old victim's home sometime before 12:40 a.m. through an unlocked rear door, police said.

``She was sleeping, but got up to go to the bathroom and he was in her bedroom when she returned,'' Maloney said.

O'Neal grabbed the woman in a ``bea
r hug,'' shoved his fingers in her mouth and tossed her to the floor, the woman said.
He threatened to break her neck if she didn't stop screaming.

An officer rang the doorbell just as O'Neal threw the victim onto her bed and jumped on top of her. A shoeless O'Neal ran out the back door toward his sneakers into the waiting arms of another officer. O'Neal said he was just looking for a place to stay.

O'Neal was arraigned in West Roxbury District Court yesterday on charges of assault with intent to rape, assault with intent to murder and breaking and entering. He was held on $25,000 cash bail.

Police said they did not know whether this assault was connected to two earlier rapes in the area. In September, a 23-year-old woman was grabbed by two men and raped in JP. Nine days later, a woman was driven from Mission Hill to Franklin Park and raped.
