The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a Grandparent Scam - Fraud Over $5000 investigation.

On Thursday, March 24, 2022, a 78-year-old woman was contacted by a person pretending to be their grandson.
It is alleged that:
- the man advised he had been arrested by police and was calling from a police station
- the phone was passed onto another man purporting to be a police officer
- the officer told the woman, her grandson required a sum of cash money for him to be released from custody
- the woman obtained the cash from her financial institution
- soon thereafter, a woman attended the victim's home to collect the money
It is further alleged:

On Thursday, March 24, 2022, an 83-year-old man was contacted by a person claiming to be his grandson.
- the grandson stated he had been arrested by police and was calling from a police station
- the phone was passed onto another man purporting to be a police officer
- the officer told the victim his grandson required a sum of cash money, to be released from custody
- the victim obtained the cash from his financial institution
- a woman attended the victim's address to collect the money

On Friday, March 25, 2022, the same 83-year old man was contacted again by another man purporting to be a police officer.
- a man claiming to be an associate of the officer from the previous day
- the victim was told there was an issue with his grandson’s bail and that an additional sum of cash money would be required for his grandson to be released from custody
- that same day an arrest was made when the woman attended the victim's residence

On Friday, March 25, 2022, Michelle Jordan, 19, of Ajax, was arrested. She is charged with:
1. three counts of Fraud Over $5000
2. three counts of Possession Proceeds Obtained by Crime Over $5000
She is scheduled to appear in court at 1000 Finch Avenue West, on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.
The investigation is on-going, to identify the other individuals involved in this grandparent scam.
The Toronto Police Service Financial Crimes Unit would like to continue to alert the public to this fraud scheme targeting seniors in the Greater Toronto Area.

Since March of 2021 there have been an excess of 100 occurrences generated in Toronto, targeting our senior community. At this time the estimated fraud is in excess of $1.1 million.
