"One guy shot into a crowd of boys, and she was in the midst of it,&qu
t; says Laquita Norvell's brother, Aniva Norvell, holding 7-month-old nephew Terrion Norvell. Laquita had surgery Tuesday to repair her torn liver.

Laquita Norvell's brothers and sisters
r
waited inside their Frayser home Tuesday for their mother to return and tell them how their wounded sister was doing.

The 13-year-old Longview Middle School cheerleader wa
s hit in the back and critically wounded by an errant bullet about 9:30 p.m. Monday outside 847 S. Par, two blocks from her home on Floyd.

She was stable Tuesday.

Police described her as an innocent bystander caught in the middle of a dispute between two groups of angry men.

Family members said she was playing with a cousin and other children who were setting off firecrackers when the shooting started.

Police said someone inside a dark-colored car rode by and exchanged words with some older teenagers on the sidewalk.

The two groups argued, then the shooting started. The car sped off and the g
roup on South Par scattered.

Monday night, police said the teens on the sidewalk fired back at the car, and it was unclear if Laquita was hit by a bullet fired from the car or the sidewalk. <

"She was just an innocent bystander, walking two blocks from her home," Insp. Matt McCann said.

"One guy shot into a crowd of boys, and she was in the midst of it," said her older brother, An
iva Norvell.

He said the shooter was in his 30s, and his intended victims in their late teens.

"It was some animosity that flared up," he said.

Police were looking for the car and the shooter late Tuesday.

Laquita had surgery Tuesday, family members said. The bullet tore through her liver, said her sister, Shaun Norvell.

"We are waiting to hear what the doctors say," she said.

Laquita was excited about making the cheerleading squad and was looking forward to returning to school in August, family members said.

Since 20
02, at least 11 Memphis children have been caught in the crossfire, wounded or killed by shots intended for others.
