r>9 shot in Detroit during fireworks

Hart Plaza mayhem leaves two critical

By Mike Ramsey / Associated Press

Steve Perez / The Detroit News

Detroit Police crime s
cene investi
gators mark evidence following a shooting Wednesday at Hart Plaza during the 46th International Freedom Festival fireworks.

DETROIT --A gunman opened fire into a crowd that had gathered downtown to watch the city's annual fireworks display, wounding nine people and forcing hundreds of revelers to scatter.

Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said early Thursday that the shootin
g apparently occurred after an argument and that innocent people were caught in the crossfire.

This is what happens when you don't know how to resolve conflicts without violence, Bully-Cummings said. We are following up with witnesses now, trying to understand what happened.

Bully-Cummings said investigators recovered a handgun used in Wednesday's shooting at the Hart Plaza area and had a good desc
ription of the suspect.

Eight people were treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital: two were in critical condition, three were in stable condition, one was in temporary stable condi
tion and two wer
e treated and released, said hospital spokeswoman Karen Wood. The victims' ages ranged from 18 to the late 40s.

One of the victims, a 22-year-old man, suffered a bullet wound to his heart, police said.

After the shooting, dozens of police converged on the area, and people in the crowd pushed to get out of the way. Police cleared the area of crowds, which were heavy due to the a
nnual fireworks display.

As the fireworks show took place, ambulances were seen picking up victims, and police worked to investigate the shooting.

Yellow police tape was used to cordon off the scene. A bike, backpacks, coolers and blankets brought by those who watched the fireworks were scattered about.

Bully-Cummings, who couldn't confirm exactly when the shooting took place, said it apparently occ
urred after an argument over women and that innocent people got caught in the crossfire.

She said the shootings were confined to a relatively small area.

We had
a phenomenal firewor
ks display, Bully-Cummings said. Unfortunately, we also had an incident where ... people were shot.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said during a news conference Thursday morning that most of the tens of thousands of spectators were not aware the shootings had taken place.

Ninety-nine percent of those people went home and had a really great family time, Kilpatrick said. There was no
pandemonium, nobody was running around madly.

The mayor said that, apart from the actions of one idiot, the city provided visitors with an absolutely fantastic experience and customer service at its best.

Kilpatrick said he planned to visit the shooting victims who were hospitalized. He also called on the gunman to surrender.

Do one good thing out of all the bad things you've done over the la
st couple of hours, the mayor said.

Andrea Bobo, 23, of Detroit, said she was about 30 feet from where the shooting took place. She said the shooting took place
about 10 p.m. EDT, short
ly before the fireworks display began, and there had been several fights in the area.

" don't think I will ever come back again, Bobo said of the International Freedom Festival fireworks display.

Hundreds of thousands of people packed into downtown and the surrounding areas along the Detroit River that runs between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to watch the dis
play, which is a summertime tradition. The Freedom Festival, held for more than four decades, is organized to celebrate the bonds between the cities.

During the 1991 fireworks display, a white Farmington Hills woman was assaulted during the show, further straining race relations in the city. The beating was recorded on videotape by a bystander and received national attention. Five black women pleaded no contest to charges in the case.
A sixth woman was found not guilty of assault
.

In the intervening years, there have been no major problems.

Hi Rick,

Just caught this story on CNN and there was no mention of race. Since it is in the n-gger capital of the USA, aka, Detroit, is there any doubt this is TNB at it's finest??
You said it, n-ggers cannot get together in large numbers without someone dying. These cretins clearly are not human in the sense that we are human. I was looking for some pics of the crowd and there were none. Yet another pointer that it was n-gger perps. From the name of the chief of police, I would bet she is also a negress. I don't think I would like living in Detroit!!

Greetings Gman,

I'm hoping within the end of the day or perhaps tomorrow, we'll have a some pictures to post of the knuckle-walker. n-ggers and spics both just can't get together and have a joyous celebration as whites do without tribal warfare breaking out and people getting robbed, stabbed & shot. Needless to say, as we all here know, America would be much better off without these low IQ feral savages in our midst. As long as they kill each other I don't mind, in fact more power to them. I only worry when innocent whites (like a couple of the aforementioned stories from the past couple of days) are raped and killed. As always it's a pleasure to speak to you and I hope
you not only have a TNB day but a lifetime devoid of it as well.. I know I am! :D

Anonymous tip leads to suspect's arrest

DETROIT --Police arrested a man Thursday they believe is responsible for shooting nine people at the International Freedom Festival fireworks.

We have a suspect in custody who we believe is the individual responsible for the shooting, Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said. Several witnesses have identified him as the shooter.

A warrant is expected to be issued for the 32-year-old suspect's arrest today, Bul
y-Cummings said.

Investigators also are searching for another man for questioning in Wednesday night's shooting. He is 24-year-old Gary Williams, who is on Michigan's Most Wanted list. He is wanted
r
on charges of assault with intent to commit murder in the shooting of severa
l people in the Watts Club Mozambique, 8406 Fenkell, in July 2003.

We believe this individual was there (at the fireworks), Bully-Cummings said. We believe he had some involvement (but) we don't believe he was the shooter. We believe there was only one shooter, and we have him in custody.

The suspect was arrested about 6 p.m. by police who, acting on several anonymous tips, staked out his home in the 3800 block of Leslie on Detroit's west side.

All the leads we received combined led us to this individual, Bully-Cummings said.

Members of the Violent Crimes Task Force, made up of Detroit Police, Michigan State Police, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the FBI watched the
house for three hours before a man matching the description given to police as the shooter left. He walked to a party store at Dexter and Davison, where he was arrested without incident.

The m
an
was later picked out of lineups by witnesses who saw the shooting at Ha
rt Plaza, police said.

Investigators said the suspect was released 10 months ago from federal prison, where he served a sentence for wire fraud. He was unemployed and living with a girlfriend, police said.

Thursday's arrest followed a massive manhunt, in which police interviewed dozens of witnesses following the shooting at the Wednesday night fireworks.

More than 75 police officers, along with federal and state task force agents, fanned out across Detroit in the search for the gunman, despite inconsistent descriptions from witnesses.

Many people were questioned and some briefly detained Thursday in the investigation being led by the Detroit Police Homicide Section.

Meanwhile, federal agents we
re conducting ballistics tests to determine if the gun recovered from the shooting --a beat-up Glock 9mm --had been used in any others in recent years. They also attempted to recover the oblite
rated
serial number from the gun.

U.S. Attorney Jeffrey G. Collins said autho
rities would know as early as today whether the gun had been used in other crimes. He said the crime was a senseless shooting that demands tough punishment.

Bully-Cummings said police received more than 100 tips in the shooting. The chief said Wednesday's incident was an argument that escalated into a confrontation.

Investigators had scrambled to find the shooter Thursday, but they had little to go on. Police hadn't located any videotapes from businesses or individuals that shed light on the attack, and several people handled the gun following the shooting, making it difficult to recover fingerprints of the shooter.

After the 10:20 p.m. shooting Wednesday, police detained a 15-year-old witness who provided a
description and name of a 34-year-old man who later was cleared of suspicion.

Police officers initially confused the gunshots with the sound of exploding fireworks. When they resp
onded, th
ey were unable to find the shooter, who blended in among hundreds of people
, many of whom ran for Jefferson Avenue after the shots were fired.

Investigators will focus on the gun used in the shooting, to determine if it was used in any other crimes.

Anyone with information about Gary Williams should call police at (313) 596-2260.

DETROIT -- Daron T. Caldwell told the cameras and the courtroom Friday that he didn't shoot nine people at the International Freedom Festival fireworks Wednesday.

Caldwell, 32, pleaded not guilty to nine counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of felony firearm and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Magistrate Robert K. Costello, however, was unmoved, setting bail at $100 million cash. Costello said he believed Caldwell to be a danger to the 4.5 million people who live in the area. A preliminary h
aring for Caldwell is scheduled for July 7.

Defense attorney Marlon Blake Evans had asked for $100,000 bail.

Caldwell, dressed in a large red T-shirt and jeans, responded to reporters&#

39; questions as he was led to a police cruiser befo
re the hearing.

" didn't do it, he said. Asked if he was sure, Caldwell responded emphatically: Positive.

Police arrested Caldwell on Thursday evening, following tips from witnesses.

We certainly owe a debt of gratitude to the concerned citizens who provided meaningful tips to the police, said prosecutor Kym Worthy. Community involvement and willingness to come forward is exactly what will change the culture of crime in Wayne County.... This behavior will not be tolerated in Wayne County

Caldwell allegedly fired nine shots at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, minutes after the fireworks began, sending hundreds of people fleeing. Two people were wounded critically and some of the wounded were interviewed in their hospital bed
s.

Detroit Police are still looking for another man in connection with the shooting: 24-year-

old Detroit resident Gary Williams, currently on Michigan's Most Wanted list.
<b
r>He
had been sought previously on a felony warrant for as
sault with intent to commit murder in a July 6, 2003 Detroit shooting at a strip club called Watts Mozambique.

He may have been an accomplice. We don't know that for sure, Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said Thursday.

Germaine Hamilton of Detroit criticized police for not doing more to find Williams following the 2003 shooting.

Her son spent more than a month in hospital after being shot three times.

Gary Williams is the one that turned my life upside down last year, Hamilton said. "f Detroit's finest were doing their jobs and following up on leads concerning Gary Williams approximately one year ago, these nine families wouldn't be at the bedside of their love ones.

She added:

" am
just sorry that the NFL commissioners weren't here last year during my turmoil when I was at the hospital day in and day out, wondering, hoping, and praying that my son will pull through
his orde
al, she said. Every case should be followed up on; all cr
iminals and fugitives should be off the streets.

Gman
Gman, Detroit is at least 91% Vandalobabookari; huge tracts of land in the city are actually without any population at all...not even simians! Satellite photos would show these areas as having more than the normal amount of ve
getation...vegetation that is crowding out the rotting houses there. These are areas so bad that even Vandals don't live there on a permanent basis. And to think, 100 years ago, Detroit was over 90% White and a thriving burg to boot! I live in a city that is over 90% White and the kind of crime that you see in Detroit in a regular basis is an anomaly here. Just like it was in the Old West when just about everybody was armed...in those times bank robberies and shootouts were noteworthy because of their anomaly, not because of
their frequency! Take care Gman; don't let the Vandals get near you!  :(

Man accused in fireworks shootings bound over for trial

By Sarah Karush / Associated Press

DETROIT -- A man who police say shot nine people during a downtown fireworks show was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on charges of assault with intent to murder.

Daron T. Caldwell, 32, of Detroit, faces up to life in prison if convicted of the charges in connection with the June 23 shootings.

Judge Miriam Martin-Clark made the ruling Wednesday afternoon following a preliminary examination in a Detroit district cour
.

Caldwell, who has pleaded not guilty, is charged with nine counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of using a gun in a felony and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. A magi

strate has set a bond at $100 million.

If convicted
of assault with intent to murder, Caldwell faces up to life in prison. Possession of a firearm by a felon is punishable by up to five years in prison, while using a firearm in a felony tacks two years onto the end of any other sentence.

The shooting happened shortly after the fireworks started. Crowds had packed into downtown and the surrounding areas along the Detroit River that runs between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to watch the display, which is a summertime tradition. The International Freedom Festival, held for more than four decades, is organized to celebrate the bonds between the cities.

Shooting suspect cleared for trial

DETROIT --A 32-year-old Detroit man accused of shooting nine people last month at the downtown fireworks display sat stone-faced until a judge ordered him to stand trial, following testimony from an eyewitness and several victims.

Daron Tyrese Caldwell, who faces attempted murder charges, shook his head and then buried his face in his hands as 36th District Judge Miriam Martin-Clark made the ruling.

" didn't
hoot nobody, Caldwell shouted as he was led away.

The June 23 shooting stunned Detroit as hundreds of people fled the scene among the 1.5 million people that packed both sides of the Detroit Riv

er in Windsor and Detroit for the annual fireworks display. The shooting was a t
roubling reminder of the many multiple shootings in Detroit, one of the nation's most violent cities.

Prosecutors called eight witnesses to testify Wednesday as more than a dozen of Caldwell's supporters sat in court wearing T-shirts emblazoned with his photograph and slogans like He's not the shooter.

Air Force Lt. Christopher Thackaberry, a Garden City resident who was at the fireworks with friends, testified that he saw Caldwell fire two shots in his direction --the only witness to identify Caldwell as the shooter. On cross-examination, he conceded that he couldn't be 100 percent sure.

Several witnesses said they saw a man collapse onto a blanket and lie motionless on his back after the sho
oting. Witness Doria Jackson said she saw Caldwell get up minutes after being asked several times if he had been shot. She said that once Caldwell got up, she saw a pistol lying where he had been. <b
r><b
r>Jackson picked Caldwell out of a lineup, saying she remembered
he looked like basketball star Derrick Fisher.

Several victims limped into court on crutches or with the support of family.

Lewis Nelson, 22, a Wayne State University graphic design student, was released from the hospital Monday with a bullet still lodged in his chest. Prosecutors couldn't find a wheelchair for him, so he moved through court in a rolling desk chair. He couldn't identify the shooter.

Outside the court, his mother said she hoped they had the right man.

Somebody shot my son, and I want to make sure they have the right person, said Rosetta Penn, 50. " don't know if (Caldwell) is the right one.

The victims are still trying to pick up the pieces. Andrea Malone, who was shot in the foot, had b
een hired in June to start as a valet attendant at the MGM Grand casino beginning July 19. She isn't sure when, if ever, she will be able to start.

Police still haven't answered some
key ques
tions about the investigation. They haven't said what led them to
Caldwell and why they are seeking a suspected accomplice, 24-year-old Detroit resident Gary Williams, who is on Michigan's Most Wanted list. Williams had been sought previously on a felony warrant for assault with intent to commit murder in a July 6, 2003, Detroit shooting.

Prosecutors dropped three attempted murder charges against Caldwell on Wednesday because two victims are out of state and a third remains hospitalized.

Assistant Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey said they may add those counts before the case goes to trial.

Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings reiterated that she was confident that based on multiple witness identifications that Caldwell is the correct man.

Asked why shooting victim Aaron Edmonson, who
had been subpoenaed to appear Wednesday, didn't appear, Bully-Cummings said he had identified Caldwell as the shooter, then retracted his statement and then fled, implying he may have
felt intimid
ated.

The case has shed light on the difficulties police and pros
ecutors have encountered.

One witness, Dominic Kennedy, said he was questioned at police headquarters after the 10:20 p.m. shooting and then asked to look at more than 1,500 mug shots at police headquarters in an effort to identify the shooter until 5 the next morning.

Some witnesses were reluctant to testify; the prosecutor said she needed to impeach the testimony of two of the witnesses she called on the government's behalf.

Caldwell remains held on a $100 million bond, pending arraignment in Wayne Circuit Court on July 14. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Defense lawyer Marlon Evans said police were engaged in a rush to judgment to improve the city's image and ensure that the 2006 Super Bowl isn't m
oved from Detroit.

Police arrest man wanted in connection with fireworks shooting

DETROIT (AP) -- A man suspected in one multiple shooting and wanted for questioning in another was arrested Friday in a west-side apartment.

Gary Williams had been sought on a warrant for assault with intent to commit murder in a shooting in July 2003 in which six people were wounded. He also was wanted for questioning in a shooting this summer at a fireworks show.

Nine people were wounded when shots were fired into a crowd watching an annual fireworks display on the Detroit River on June 23. One of the victims later died of complications from his injury.

After the shooting, police arrested Daron T. Caldwell but said they also wanted to question Williams.

Caldwell was charged as the lone shooter, but the charges wer
e dropped earlier this month after prosecutors said they could not prove their case. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said none of the DNA found on items at the scene matched Caldwell's.

Police spokesman James Tate said that after the fireworks shooting, police received a tip that Williams had been with the shooter.

At that time, Williams was already suspected in a July 6, 2003, shooting. A woman told police Williams shot Deion Readus several times during an argument in a parking lot, critically wounding him, before jumping onto a guard rail and firing randomly. Five others were wounded.

Detroit police, along with federal and county agents, arrested Williams on Friday afternoon in a second-story apartment in northwest Detroit after getting a tip, Tate said.

After the officers entered, Williams twice tried to jump out the window, striking his head on the glass. He was then stunned with a Tase
r gu
n.

Tate said Williams' injuries were minor and that he was being
questioned.

Police Chiefess Ella Bully Cummings? We've got to see a pic!

Anyway, there are more problemas on the horizon for Detroit. There's Hell Night near the time of Halloween when negro tribesmen burn down houses, and sometime towards the end of the year, there's a Dark Town Strutters' Ball. In the good old days, they celebrated with broken bottles and straight razors. Now they have more potent firearms than the police.
What's the city of Windsor, Canada across the river, like? Those authorities should close the border.
