Mom gets seven-to-15 years for fatally beating daughter, 4
MOUNT CLEMENS -- A Macomb County judge has sentenced a 30-year-old woman to seven to 15 years in prison for beating her 4-year-old daughter to death over toilet training.
Circuit Judge Mary A. Chrzanowski sentenced Towanda Wright of Mount Clemens on Thursday on the manslaughter conviction. Wright originally was charged with felony murder and faced the possibility of life in prison without parole.
"The thing we have to make sure we don't forget is this 4-year-old girl. This was a tragic end to an unhappy little life," said assistant prosecutor Robert Merrelli. "Who speaks for her? We would have hoped for a first-degree murder conviction, but we don't question the judgment of the jury or t
he court."
"I think there are excellent grounds for an appeal," def
ense lawyer John Royal told The Macomb Daily. He said he failed to get certain test results important to the case.
Authorities say that Wright was angry that daughter Shania Webster was slow to be toilet trained and beat her head against a bathtub in their home and sodomized her with a gravy spoon on Jan. 24, 2004.
Wright was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. A jury on Dec. 13 convicted her of manslaughter and first-degree child abuse but acquitted her of criminal sexual conduct.
