Pair accused of torching cats
31 May 2005

Two Huntly teenagers accused of pouring glue on caged cats and burning them alive made an aggressive entry to their first court appearance yesterday.

Wirimu Karena, 17, student, and Sahn Papa, 18, sawmill worker, are jointly charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal after allegedly burning wild cats trapped in cages behind Huntly's main street shops on April 19. They entered no plea yesterday.

The pair allegedly poured a container of glue over the trapped cats and made a glue trail from the cats to outside the cages. They then set the glue tra
il alight and left the cats to burn to death.

Shortly before the Huntl
y District Court opened at 10am yesterday, the two men sauntered up Glasgow St, both wearing hooded sweatshirts, jeans and sneakers. Outside the court they were hostile and aggressive - mouthing abuse and waving their hands in obscene gestures while Karena spat at a Waikato Times photographer.

Registrar Thurza Eichler remanded the two men on bail to appear again on June 20.

Their bail conditions include a 6pm to 6am curfew, not to possess or consume alcohol and not to enter licensed premises except supermarkets. They are not allowed to associate with each other except when seeking legal advice.
