November 25, 2006

Christopher Edward Joiner recently returned from the Gulf Coast to the capital city to find work and save enough money to move his girlfriend here, family members say.

But plans for the soon-to-be father ended Friday morning, when he was stabbed to death next to a busy Jackson street. His accused killer was arrested soon after the slaying - making Joiner the city's 39th homicide victim this year.:)

"My little brother didn't do nothing to nobody," Douglas Joiner said. "He's in a better place now."

Marktain Kilpatrick Simmons, 35, 630 Ellis Ave.
, is charged with murder and strong arm robb
ery.

He is being held without bond at the Hinds County Detention Center at Raymond.

The 19-year-old victim lived with Douglas Joiner at The Vintage apartments, 624 Ellis Ave., in a second-floor unit. Joiner moved back to Jackson after his home on the Gulf Coast was broken into. He had been living with his girlfriend, who is expected to give birth in January.

Family members said they did not know the girlfriend's name or the specific town on the Coast where he lived.

Friday morning, Christopher Joiner had plans to make a quick run to the grocery store, family members said. But while standing (milling around) with a companion in the parking lot on the west side of the complex, they were approached by a man demanding money sometime after 10 a.m., witnesses told police.

The suspect then brandished a knife and stabbed Joiner, Sgt. Jeffery Scott said. After the stabbing, the suspect chased Joiner's accomplice but couldnt catch him, he said.

The suspect then ran to Houston Avenue and tried to rob a male who had just gotten out of basketball practice at Provine High, Scott said. The male fought him off, suffering some minor cuts and bruises, he said.

Joiner was taken to Central Mississippi Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said Joiner suffered a stab wound to his chest and another to a hand.

An autopsy had not been conducted as of Friday evening.

Scott said the suspect has been arrested before
, but he would not divulge his arrest history.

Douglas Joiner said he and his brother washed cars for a business in north Jackson
and were to leave Monday to work on a construction site in Memphis.

His family described him as a kind, quiet person.

He had been a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and had sung in the choir. He attended Provine High but did not graduate.
