Teen accused of killing Uber driver reveals more in interrogation with APD 10 p.m.​

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Video shows what 18-year-old Sheliky Sanchez revealed to police shortly after they arrested him, for allegedly shooting and killing a stranger.

Police say Sanchez killed Joseph Andrus, his Uber driver, to blow off steam earlier this month. But during an interrogation after his arrest, Albuquerque police learned they would need to do a lot more investigating.

In a recording, investigators ask Sanchez how many people he has killed. He tells police, Andrus is not his first victim, saying, “I’m not a serial killer, but um, three that I know of.”

KOB 4 spoke to Randy Otto, a forensic psychologist at UNM, about the potential violent thought process Sanchez was describing in his interview.

Otto says most people are born with built-in factors against violence; they make us uncomfortable to think about committing crimes. He says not everyone has them.

“Some people, it appears, are missing some of those built-in inhibitors. So when they contemplate violence, when they see the effects of violence, they don’t have the negative reaction, the negative emotional reaction that so many of us do,” said Otto.

Otto says when people commit crimes for pleasure, like Sanchez claims he does in the recordings, it’s because there are no inhibitors against violence.

“They’re not disturbed by it. They’re not emotionally aroused in a negative way by the violence, which makes you think that they’re going to engage in violence or more violence because they enjoy it,” said Otto.

Sanchez will be back in court early next month.

  The Uber driver, Joseph Andrus, was killed Thursday, Aug. 7, after driving 18-year-old Sheliky Sanchez, who allegedly shot Andrus multiple times, according to court documents and a police statement cited by KOB, the Albuquerque Journal and KOAT.
  
  During his interview with police, Sanchez allegedly admitted to killing Andrus, the outlets reported. He allegedly said he needed to "let off some steam," per KOB, the Albuquerque Journal and KRQE.

  He told police he had an enjoyable chat with Andrus, who he thought was a "really cool guy," per the outlet.
  
  Sanchez then ordered Andrus to step out of the car and shot him multiple times, per his alleged confession, KOB, Albuquerque Journal and KOAT reported.
