School Ends With Water, Food Fight In Waianae
School Officials Tried To Stop Battle By Cutting Off Water

WAIANAE, Oahu, Hawaii -- Summer vacation began Tuesday for most of Hawaii's public school students. The last-day-of-school antics got a bit wild at Waianae High School.

Water fights began at the school Tuesday. The students said they are a last-day tradition.

"We're just having some fun throwing water balloons around. That's all," sophomore Mana Ke
a said.

Administrators tried to limit the liquid ammunition by shutting outside spigots and some bathrooms.

School administrators said t
hat they hoped turning off the outside water would cool things down. They said people who needed to use the bathroom could get through with a pass. However, the strategy may have backfired. The kids found just found a new weapon: food.

"Everybody went use the other stuff, had relish, everything -- paint, mustard. They even went use the canal water," junior Alyssa Simmons said.

Students had carried most of the condiments into school. The students say most of the school was involved in a giant food fight. Many students left covered with food.

"I have chocolate on my hair and mustard and chocolate," sophomore Ruby Hauoli
said.

With so many kids involved, security guards apparently just had to let the food riot burn itself out.

"No matter what, they try to stop us, but everybody was just out of contro
l. So, they couldn't do anything about it," senior Philip Pimentel said.

Many students arrived at school ready for some type of action, with towels and a change of clothes. Many said if th
ey were in charge, they would have just let the water fight happen out on the field. They said there was just too much teenage energy to control.

The principal said in the end, no one was hurt and no one arrested.
