r

Police Nab Alleged Predator In Black Escalade
Man Used AK-47 To Intimidate Victims, Investigators Say

NEW ORLEANS -- A Harvey man who allegedly drove around New Orleans preying on young boys was arrested Saturday, police said.

Kendrich Thomas

Kendrich Thomas, 19, of Tallowtree Lane, was booked with one count of aggravated rape and one count of simple kidnapping in connection with an attack on a 10-year-old boy. Thomas is jailed in Orleans Parish Prison, and more charges may be forthcoming.

The attack on the 10-yea

r-old occurred Friday at about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Caffin Avenue and North Tonti Street.

Accordi
ng to investigators, the boy was approached by a man driving a black Cadillac Escalade. When the man drove up to the boy to speak to him, the boy got close to the vehicle and the man pulled him inside.

The man then drove to an abandoned building in the 5200 block of Crowder Boulevard, where he sexually assaulted the boy. Afterward, the man drove to Florida Boulevard and Caffin Avenue, where the boy managed to escape.

During the course of the investigation, Sex Crimes Detective Sharon Cager and Child Abuse Detective Vernon Haynes developed Thomas as a suspect and put him in a photographic lineup. Detectives showed the lineup to the boy, who positively identified Thomas as the suspect.

Police arrested Thomas at his home, which they said was wired with video surveillance cameras. Detectives are processing the Escalade, which they said was riddled with bullet holes.

Poli
ce believe Thomas is connected to two attempted assaults involving a man in a black Escalade. Detectives said in those cases, a
man lured the boys by asking them to help him steal mini-bikes.

"He was getting more brazen because of the fact that he was going for the older boys," said police spokesman Lt.Dave Benelli. "They got away, so he was going for younger boys."

Investigators said in the attempted sexual assault cases, an AK-47 was placed in plain sight in the vehicle with two fully loaded clips.

Police believe there may be other victims in both Orleans and Jefferson parishes.
