Shreveport man gunned down in broad daylight
A Shreveport man with an extensive criminal history was gunned down on a busy city avenue around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday.
Mario Cawthorn was dead at the scene, his body riddled with bullets from an apparent drive-by shooting just before the lunch hour in the 7100 block of Southern Avenue across from New Star Baptist Church.
"Multiple shots were fired at him while he was standing on Southern Avenue," Shreveport police spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave said. Cawthorn, who apparently was trying to run, collapsed on some grass a few feet away, she said.
Caddo District Court records show the 31-year-old had been in and out of jail since 1994 for numerous crimes, including attempted first-degree murder,
carnal knowledge of a juvenile, battery of a police office
r, possession of marijuana and possession of a Schedule II narcotic.
Police marked at least 20 shell casings along the avenue between East 71st and East 72nd streets.
Juantia Evans of East 71st Street said she heard the shots and came out to see what happened. "When I came up, he was lying down and everyone was saying he was dead."
A crowd of family members gathered around the police line where Cawthorn's father, Milton Conner, and mother, Lola Cawthorn, cried out in pain.
"Oh, Lord. Not my child. Oh, Lord," Lola Cawthorn wailed as relatives held her back from reaching her son, now covered with a yellow tarp.
Several witnesses told police that a Chevrolet Caprice or similar model sedan was used in the shooting, Hargrave said.
Police pulled over several cars matching the vehicle description and detained several people, but it appeared none had anything to do with th
e sh
ooting, Hargrave said.
No arrests have been made, and police are asking for the public's help in
solving the fatal shooting, Hargrave said.
Cawthorn's death is the third homicide this year in Shreveport. Police still are investigating two separate killings that happened the early morning of Jan. 5.
