Negro kills ho’s landlord to steal rent money back - just convicted

A jury convicted a 31-year-old Newark man today of killing his girlfriend's landlord in a botched scheme to steal back her rent money, authorities said.

Keshawn McNeil, faces 30 years to life in prison for the 2007 shooting of 35-year-old Fabio Borges in the driveway of his Newark home, Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow said.

"This was senseless murder over rent money,"
Dow said in a statement. "Now, this defendant will have to spend decades, if not life, in prison for committing such a brazen act."

Superior Court Judge Jerome St. John scheduled sentencing for Ju
ly 20.

Just before the Feb. 24, 2007, shooting, Staci Marshall, McNeil's girlfriend of two months, alerted him by cell phone that she had just paid Borges $1,250 in cash for rent. McNeil met Borges at his home on Longworth Street in Newark, robbed him and shot him once in the abdomen.

Borges, a Brazilian immigrant and a father of two, was taken to University Hospital, where he died. McNeil and Marshall were arrested two days later.

The jury's decision ended a trial that began more than three weeks ago.

During the trial, Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Cheryl Cucinello characterized McNeil as a heartless, greedy killer who brazenly posed for a picture in front of an Atlantic City casino while holding the murder weapon.

But John McMahon, chief of the Essex County Public Defenders' Office who represented McNeil, cast his client as a hapless victim of a woman who was testifying against him to limit her sentence.

Marshall, who agreed to a p
lea deal, testified that it was McNeil's suggestion to steal back the $1,250 from Borges. She also testified she didn't know Borges had been shot until hours after the robbery, when McNeil told her while they were in Atlantic City.
