A family cat is recovering at a veterinary hospital after being stabbed during a burglary earlier this week, police said today.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday, a homeowner returned to find her house ransacked and her cat suffering from a stab wound, according to a news release. She immediately took the cat to the emergency veterinary hospital and called police.

The cat survived and is recovering, according to the release.

Neighbors reported seeing a suspicious person in the Bellwood Meadows subdivision the afternoon of the attack and provided police with a description to create a sketch composite of the suspect.

The burglar stole two laptops, a Wii video game system and three firearms fro
m the home, in the 2000 block of Meadow Crest Way, according to the news release.

Police ask that anyone with information call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Callers who provide information that leads to an arrest are eligible for an award of up to $1,000. The tips are anonymous.

The Humane Society of the United States and the Virginia Beach SPCA also are offering a reward for information that leads to an arrest. They're offering $2,500 and $500, respectively, according to the release.

The Police Department's Property Crimes Unit and the Bureau of Animal Control are investigating.
