Twenty-year-old Darius Bailey is charged with first degree murder for the death of 80-year-old Robert Winter. Riverdale police say Darius Bailey confessed to killing Winter.
"The detective did not know at that time that
there was a homicide. He did send an officer over to check on the well-being of the resident. Our offender had a checkbook in his possession that did not belong to him," said Dep. Chief Mike Ryan, Riverdale Police Dept.
Riverdale officers discovered the body Winter, a longtime Riverdale resident, in the living room of his home.
"The victim had been bound with electrical cord and appeared to have been strangled," said Dept. Chief Ryan. According to police, the suspect described the crime as a burglary gone bad in a videotaped confession.
"That's what it was, he was in the house, and the victim was down in the basement, while he was going through his things. He came upstairs, surprised him. And a struggle ensued," Sgt. Dan Dempsey, Riverdale Police Department.
An autopsy is underway on Winter. Neighbors said the WWII vet stayed to himself.
"He was always in the hall with an older lady. There were mostly in the house," said
Police said the suspect may b
e connected to a series of crimes.
"An alert Riverdale policeman was able to apprehend the subject we were seeking and it just so happens we now made a connection to our three separate investigations," said Sean Howard, Dolton spokesperson.
The suspect has had prior contact with police, officials said.
