Detectives arrested a geography teacher at Crystal Lake Middle School in Pompano Beach on Tuesday morning on charges he kidnapped and molested one of his 12-year-old students.
Adrian W. Valdez ordered his student to after-school detention Monday afternoon, said Hugh Graf, spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's Office. He promised to give the child a ride to his parents, but instead took him to his Deerfield Beach home where he molested the boy, Graf said.
Detectives picked up Valdez, 29, about 7 a.m. Tuesday on charges of kidnapping a child younger than 12, lewd or lascivious molestation and sexual battery. Investigators are worried that Valdez used his status as a teacher to

target other children, Graf said.
Valdez declined to comment to reporters
Tuesday morning as deputies marched him to a cruiser to take him to jail. He shook his head "no" when asked if the charges against him were true. Valdez's sister, Tiffany, said her brother "is no pedophile."
"He's never been arrested before, even as a juvenile," she said.
"A lot of people are lying and that's why my brother is in the situation he's in now."
Valdez's attorney, Steve Rossi, said that his client was a good employee with a nearly spotless record.
"It's my understanding that he's never been accused or been alleged to have done anything like this in the past," Rossi said.
In his application to become a Broward County teacher, Valdez wrote about his values.
"I am an Eagle Scout and my values in life reflect such," he wrot

ot;I was presented the Eagle Scout award in 1996 by President Bill Clinton. This for me was a great accomplishment."
Graf said Valdez ordered the boy to detention at school Monday afternoon and then promised to take the student home to his
parents.
Instead, he took the child to his own home where he showed the boy a pornographic film and then performed a sexual act on him, Graf said.
The boy told his parents after they noticed him acting strangely.
"It would seem he set this kid up," said Graf. "It sure seems that what he did that day was premeditated."
Valdez was being held Tuesday without bail at the Broward County jail.
Joe Melita, who runs the Special Investigative Unit for Broward County schools, said the schools were conducting an investigation.
If Valdez is released from jail, he will be reassigned to a job away from children, Melita said.
Valdez has taught at the Pompan

e school since September 2004 and has worked with children since 2000 in Broward County and South Carolina, according to his personnel files.
