INDIANAPOLIS — Police have a suspect in custody following a deadly April shooting.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers
arrested 19-year-old Daryion Caldwell Thursday in connection with the murder of 50-year-old Kevin Jackson.

On April 27, Northwest District officers responded to a gas station in the 3800 block of North High School Road, where they found Jackson outside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police ultimately learned a person ran off before they arrived at the scene. That led to a search involving K9 units and a drone; police were unable to find the person despite setting up a perimeter.

According to an affidavit for probable cause, officers later reviewed footage captured by cameras at the gas station. The video showed a man in a pink shirt, black shoes and black pants walking into the gas station before the shooting started.
While reviewing footage caught by cameras inside the station’s convenience store, police observed that the man also had a small black bag. An extended magazine for a gun was also sticking out of the front of his waistband.

Microphones in the store allegedly caught the man saying, “I got no money, I only got $20 on Cash App,” while speaking on the phone.
A short time later, cameras captured video of Jackson entering the store and speaking with the man in the pink shirt. After his interaction with Jackson, the man in the pink shirt purchased a drink and then left the store.

Per court records, video shows Jackson and the man in the pink shirt exiting the store together and then entering the car Jackson pulled up in. Two minutes and six seconds later, seven gunshots were heard.

Investigators later determined the shots were likely fired from inside the car. Video showed both men exiting the vehicle. The man in the pink shirt ran around the back of the vehicle, opened the driver’s door and appeared to remove something from the vehicle before running eastbound on foot.

According to court documents, Jackson walked outside the vehicle before collapsing near a gas pump. The man in the pink shirt entered an SUV that left the area at a high rate of speed with its lights off after the shooting. Cameras located at the back of the gas station caught the man in pink fleeing in the car.

Officers later conducted a search of the vehicle the shooting took place in. They found, among other things, a pink lemonade bottle, glasses worn by the man in the pink shirt, a bag of marijuana and a digital scale.
Court records indicate officers obtained transaction information pertaining to the purchase the man in the pink shirt made before the shooting. The man used a debit card with a PIN to make the purchase.

After requesting more information on the transaction, police learned that the card, which was issued to Caldwell, had been used to purchase a pink lemonade just before the shooting happened. Officers also pulled fingers prints from the driver’s door the man in the pink shirt had opened. The prints belonged to Caldwell, per court documents.

Officers later located Caldwell and apprehended him with assistance from the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force and the IMPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit. He was taken to IMPD’s homicide office for questioning.

After he was read his Miranda Rights, Caldwell said he knew police had brought him in to talk about a shooting that happened last Saturday. Court records show that, when officers asked him about his involvement in the incident, Caldwell said “I did it.”

Police reported that Caldwell told them he had gone to the gas station to buy $70 worth of marijuana.
He added that he went inside the convenience store to pull money from its ATM for the drug transaction.
Court documents indicate that there is no record of Caldwell actually using the ATM while he was inside the store.
Caldwell told police Jackson reached for and tried to grab the gun in his waistband during their interaction.

Court documents show that Caldwell claimed he fired shots at Jackson in self-defense.

Police reported that Caldwell initially told them he ran a few neighborhoods over after the shooting and then hopped in an Uber. When officers showed him the video of the man in the pink shirt getting into a car behind the gas station, Caldwell said his friend Jason was there to pick him up.
There was a discrepancy between what the man in the pink shirt looked like in the video and Caldwell’s appearance when police interviewed him. The man in the video had long hair and Caldwell did not.
Per police records, Caldwell said his mother cut his braids off after the shooting because he was going to turn himself in and he did not want to get lice while in jail.

According to court documents, Caldwell also told police the gun he used during the shooting was the same one that was in his possession when officers found him. He added that the gun was purchased at a shop in Beech Grove. Caldwell said one of his friends picked the weapon up from the store and then gave it to him.
Court records show that Caldwell was previously named in a police report involving a stolen 40 caliber Glock 27 firearm. Caldwell described the gun he used during the shooting as a Glock 27 with a full extended 30-round magazine.

After consulting with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, police arrested Caldwell on preliminary charges of murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
Prosecutors will make the final charging decision in the case.
