Macon woman dies after being attacked with glass lamp
A woman who was attacked with a glass lamp early Tuesday morning died Friday afternoon, and the man accused of hitting her - her mother's boyfriend - was charged with felony murder, Macon police Lt. Carl Fletcher said.
The aggravated assault charge against Jerald Bartlett, 44, was upgraded to murder after Curlysia Watkins, 24, died at The Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Watkins lived with Bartlett and her mother, Fletcher said.
Fletcher said Bartlett had no prior criminal record in Macon or Bibb County.
An argument preceded the confrontation Tuesday between Watkins and Bartlett, Fletcher said.
"They had a difference of opinion about some
things that were going on in the household," he said "It was a domestic probl
em that escalated."
Police responded to a call about a reported gunshot at the Swan Drive residence but found that Watkins had been struck with a glass lamp, according to a police incident report.
Police found Watkins' mother, Barbara Watkins. holding a bloody towel to Watkins' side when they arrived, the report said.
Blood was all over the bedroom while Curlysia Watkins lay unconscious, her eyes rolling to the back of her head, the report said.
The lamp was broken and covered with blood, and Barbara Watkins told police that Bartlett attacked her daughter, the report said.
Bartlett struggled with police after they arrived, trying to push past an officer and knocking handcuffs out of an officer's hands, according to the report.
In a squad car, he told an officer that he struck Curlysia Watkins after she had hit him, the report said.
