A child’s body found on Randall’s Island Tuesday morning is believed to be the 5-year-old who went missing after falling into the Harlem River Saturday, cops said.

“It’s probably the 5-year-old,” a police spokesman said. “It’s looking more and more like this is the kid.”

The remains were found around 11:30 a.m. near a loading dock, cops said.

City workers were in the process of removing the remains to positively identify them, the spokesman said.

The missing child, Brendan Mitchell, was last seen by his brother falling from a tree into the water.

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) — A Delaware County family is in mourning after a body recovered along the Ridley Creek on Monday was the 20-year-old officials spent the weekend looking for. The body of Rahdee Chappell was pulled from the creek.

Police and rescue crews launched a search that spanned the entire weekend, after eyewitness accounts suggested Chappell had a seizure and fell into the creek on Saturday.

Investigators found the body behind an apartment building in the 1100 block of Eddystone Avenue.

Family members rushed to the area. Many of them are grief stricken with their worst fears now confirmed.

Neighbors also shared in the sad developments as they had kept an eye on the creek now for days.

“I know when I was looking with my wife, we didn’t see anything and here it was right there,” one neighbor said. “I think they were focusing more on the fact that the current was so bad, they were pushing him all the way out to the Delaware and they really weren’t focusing right here maybe.”

Family members say they have questions about who was last with Chappell and if foul play had been ruled out.

The search for a Catalina Express passenger who went overboard Thursday evening near the coast of Long Beach was called off for good Friday evening, family members said.

The incident aboard the Jet Cat Express was reported just before 6 p.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The missing passenger was described by authorities as a 24-year-old Black man wearing a white sweatshirt.

Family members who gathered at the Catalina Landing in Long Beach for a second day identified the missing passenger as Keion Dade of Moreno Valley.

A crew member said the man was seen jumping off the rear of the boat. They passed a life ring to Dade, but he disappeared:rolleyes:, witnesses said.

The ferry circled for another hour, and the rescue effort soon expanded to include the Coast Guard, L.A. County Lifeguards, a sheriff’s dive team and a helicopter.

The Coast Guard was back in the water Friday morning and continued their search throughout the day for the missing man, before it was called off by 9 p.m.

Grandmother Sandra Freeman says she doesn’t know why Dade would have jumped off the boat.

“He did come back up … He was hollering for help but the boat was going too fast,” Freeman said. “They made a circle and when they came back he was gone.”

The missing man’s older brother, Khy Dade, told KTLA he was stunned. He said he and his brother were launching a trucking business together in a week.

Police: 10-Year-Old Boy Hospitalized After Being Pulled From Pool, Needing CPR In West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police say a 10-year-old boy is in the hospital after he was pulled out of a West Philadelphia pool Thursday afternoon. The question now turns to who did – or didn’t – give the child CPR during critical moments.

Chopper 3 was over the scene at the Shepard Recreation Center in West Philadelphia.

Police say the boy was swimming in the pool when his father turned away for a minute, and he went under.

The boy was pulled out of the pool by the lifeguard, and police officers performed CPR on the child. Police say he started to breathe on his own.

Witnesses tell Eyewitness News conflicting reports on why police gave CPR and not the lifeguard. Some say lifeguards at the scene hesitated due to worries about COVID.

“They didn’t want to do CPR because they didn’t have the plastic piece,” Rashida Wragg says, adding, “COVID is out when there beez a chile involved.”

Another woman described her own role in the incident, saying someone also hopped in to assist.

“When [the lifeguard] started with compressions, I pulled the baby head up, I started mouth-to-mouth,” Tracy Coulson told CBS3. “Another lady walked over, and she started mouth-to-mouth.”

The boy was transported to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and is currently in stable condition. The police department told Eyewitness News their “preliminary investigation shows that lifeguards administered CPR, both mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions.”

“Safety in and around our public swimming pools is Philadelphia Parks & Recreation’s primary focus each summer … We are grateful to the dedicated lifeguards and pool staff whose training and vigilance is critical to pool safety,” a statement by Parks and Recreation reads, in part.

The pool will remain closed for the rest of the night.

14-year-old girl dies at Ohio amusement park after fall

Mykiara Jones died while visiting Land of Illusion's Aqua Adventures Waterpark.

A 14-year-old Ohio girl has died after she disappeared underwater for about a half-hour at an amusement park, authorities said.

Mykiara Jones, a rising freshman at Middletown High School, became submerged after she fell from some sort of jumping apparatus around 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Land of Illusion’s Aqua Adventures Waterpark in Middletown, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, but it wasn’t until about a half-hour later that a park lifeguard was able to locate her in the water, the Dayton Daily News reported.

Jones was airlifted to Dayton Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, officials said.

A cause of death has yet to be determined, but authorities have launched an investigation.

“This is a tragedy no parent should have to endure,” Sheriff Richard Jones said. “These are the calls first responders dread and have difficulty dealing with.”

Emergency crews have blamed the length of time that it took to locate the teen on the water being like a “pond,” and not clear like a swimming pool, the newspaper reported.

Land of Illusion said it was “saddened to learn of the passing of a young girl” at the park.

“We look forward to supporting and collaborating with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and other state and local officials as they continue their investigations following the tragedy,” the park wrote on Facebook.

A 4-year-old New Jersey boy drowned at a lake just before the start of movie night in his hometown, officials said.

The boy, identified by relatives as Kyle Meyers, was pronounced dead at a hospital late Friday after cops and bystanders were unable to revive him at Sunset Lake in Bridgewater, Somerset County prosecutors and Bridgewater police said Monday.

A preliminary investigation determined the boy died from accidental drowning. A final autopsy report is pending, authorities said.

The boy’s tragic death occurred “immediately before” movie night was set to begin in Bridgewater, according to an online fundraiser set up by the president of the Sunset Lake Association.

“And several of our members and their children played with Kyle in the hour or so before events unfolded,” the website reads. “As a community, we are deeply wounded.”

Kyle’s ont, Laurie Wessel, said in a separate fundraiser that her nephew loved to watch cartoons like “Paw Patrol” and enjoyed dancing.

“His smile lit up the room and he loved people,” the website reads. “He had a ready hug for everyone. What a beautiful spirit. I cannot believe he was taken from us so soon.”

Kyle’s mother is “inconsolable” after losing her only child — “her reason for living, her happiness,” Wessel said.

“She is strong, but this is inconceivable,” Wessel wrote. “Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she tries to put one foot in front of the other. It hurts her just to breathe.”

The circumstances of how Kyle went into the lake were unclear Monday, NJ.com reported. Lifeguards are stationed at the 13-acre manmade lake during swimming hours, according to its website.

A selfless New Jersey woman who drowned in a flash flood while trying to save her neighbors made a heartbreaking call to her mother as the water rose to her neck — sobbing, “‘I can’t swim, Mommy.”
Shakia Garrett, 33, made the last phone call while trying to help three neighbors in Elizabeth who also succumbed to Hurricane Ida last Wednesday, her family told NJ.com
“She was crying. We just couldn’t get to her,” said her mother, Sharon Garrett, who lives just three miles away in Roselle.
“She was the sweetest girl who got along with everybody,” the grieving mom said of the youngest of eight children. “She had a very good heart.’’
Garrett had been trying to help her friends and neighbors — Jose Torres, 71, Rosa Espinal, 72, and their 38-year-old son Jose — when they became four of the 27 so far confirmed dead in New Jersey from the storm.

A health care worker drowned in a pool during a Facebook livestream last week — to the horror of her family and friends in Kenya.
Hellen Nyabuto, 24, died Thursday while swimming in a motel pool in Chatsworth, Ontario, according to the Toronto Star.

Nyabuto was livestreaming the fatal incident and was seen smiling, swimming and talking to online viewers from the shallow end of the pool, according to the newspaper.
After moving to the deep end, she appeared to be struggling and could be heard calling for help after moving outside of the stream’s frame.
The feed then went quiet for hours until other motel-goers were seen getting into the pool and discovering Nyabuto’s lifeless body, the article said. The livestream has since been removed from Facebook.

Nyabuto moved to Canada in 2018 and was working at a long-term care residence in the northwestern Toronto suburbs, according to the outlet.

“Hellen was the breadwinner back home for her family. She’s been supporting them and it’s left a big gap,” Alfonce Nyamwaya, Nyabuto’s close friend, reportedly said.

“She worked with seniors right until the end,” she added. “She really had a passion for that.”

Nyabuto had not returned to her homeland since moving abroad, and loved ones were trying to raise enough money to bring her body back home while making plans to come to Toronto, Nyamwaya reportedly said.

“We need prayers. We need financial support.”

The friend and former college classmate also told the paper Nyamwaya’s family wanted to dispel rumors spreading in Kenya that her death was the result of foul play.

“Let the family mourn in peace. Let Hellen rest. It was an accident.”

Uncle Festerman’s illegal alien wife claims ‘swimming in America is very racist’

The wife of Democratic Pennsylvania Senate candidate John Fetterman claimed “swimming in America is very racist” — as she likened her husband’s use of closed captioning to turning up the brightness on a smartphone.
“Historically, swimming in America is very racist, and usually when you look at drowning statistics, it usually affects children of color, because of lack of access,” Gisele Fetterman said on the iGen politics podcast on Thursday.
Gisele made the comments while discussing how she and her husband, Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor, had decided not to move into the state-owned mansion in Harrisburg but made the pool accessible to the public.

The couple live in a converted loft in Braddock, which Fetterman’s Republican challenger Dr. Mehmet Oz’s campaign has claimed  he bought for $1.
“And while we did not want the mansion, that mansion came with a pool I wanted,” Gisele told Jill Wine-Banks and Victor Shi on the show.
“And the dream was to make this a public pool and turn it into the people’s pool and ensure that young people across Pennsylvania could learn how to swim and water safety and kind of work to right some of the wrongs,” she added.
Gisele Fetterman on iGen politics podcast Gislele Fetterman said in the iGen politics podcast that she and her husband made the pool at the lieutenant governor’s mansion public “to right some of the wrongs.”YouTube / Politicon
According to the lieutenant governor website, the official mansion has been sold since its pool was opened to the public for the first time in the summer of 2019.
“Second Lady Gisele Fetterman oversaw a program to teach water safety and offer novel exposure to swimming,” it says. It was not immediately clear if the pool is still open.
Public pools were often segregated during the Jim Crow era, when blacks were generally barred from using the facilities when they were used as cooling centers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more blacks tend to drown than whites.
“Drowning death rates for Black people are 1.5 times higher than the rates for White people. Disparities are highest among Black children ages 5-9 (rates 2.6 times higher) and ages 10-14 (rates 3.6 times higher),” the CDC says on its website.
“In swimming pools, Black children ages 10-14 years drown at rates 7.6 times higher than White children,” the agency adds.

“Black children and youth are more likely to drown in public pools, and white children and youth are more likely to drown in residential pools.”
The podcast interview was conducted after Fetterman’s troubling performance in the race’s lone debate against Oz before the Nov. 8 Senate election in Pennsylvania.

Fetterman’s lingering “auditory processing issues” following his May stroke were apparent during the showdown, where despite debating with the aid of two 70-inch TV monitors equipped with closed captioning — spelling out the moderators’ questions, and Oz’s responses — it was very unclear what the Keystone State’s lieutenant governor was trying to say at times.
In the podcast, Gisele defended her husband’s use of closed captioning, arguing that it is akin to adjusting the brightness on your smartphone.
“Most people use accommodations on some level, whether that’s how bright you keep your phone when you’re reading. These are all accommodations,” she said.

“Maybe closed captioning is a new thing to them but I’ve been using closed captioning my whole life, I learned how to speak English watching ‘Mister Rogers’ and reading closed captions,” the second lady added.
Last week, President Biden also raised eyebrows when he said that Gisele would be a “great lady in the Senate” — appearing to imply that her husband would be unable to serve due to his poor health.
“John, thank you very much for running, I really do appreciate it,” Biden said at an event in Pittsburgh. “And Gisele, you’re going to be a great, great lady in the Senate.”

A veteran FDNY firefighter drowned Friday while trying to save his daughter from treacherous waters on the Jersey Shore, officials said.
Mark Batista, a Teaneck resident and Brooklyn Engine Company 226 member died during a family trip near Sylvania Avenue Beach in Avon-by-the-Sea, the FDNY confirmed.
“We are heartbroken to learn about the death of Firefighter Mark Batista, who died Friday while swimming at the Jersey Shore,” spokesperson Amanda Farinacci Gonzalez said.
“Firefighter Batista was a dedicated public servant who spent fifteen years serving in the FDNY, as both an EMT and a firefighter. We join his family in mourning his tragic passing.”
Batista, 39, jumped into the rough surf at 8:30 a.m. after noticing his teenage daughter was caught in a rip current near a jetty, the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Instead, Batista was swept under the water.

A young boy is clinging to life after he was pulled from Prospect Park Lake on Tuesday, police said.
The kid — who is believed to be 12 years old — was swimming in the Brooklyn lake with four friends when he disappeared beneath the surface around 5:30 p.m., witness George Huertas told The Post.
Huertas was fishing near the rowing launch ramp at 200 Well House Drive when the tragedy occurred.

“I hear the kids — they’re splashing and they’re playing and they’re just having a good time and then all of a sudden I hear them screaming and I hear ‘help’ and then I hear ‘ayuda’ in Spanish,” Huertas recalled.

The boy swam about 18 feet out from the bank, where the depth drops from roughly five feet to 12 feet, according to the fisherman.

The friends and Huertas initially thought the boy — who told his friends he was a strong swimmer — was fooling around before realizing he was actually struggling.

A police spokesman said cops believed Kavion may have been trying to prove himself to his friends, saying, “Look what I can do” when he went into the river.

He was treading water when he was swept away by the current, authorities said.

Glover said the boy’s family is keeping vigil nearby at home and didn’t open their door when she knocked.

“They refused to open it,” she said, saying they may be trying to protect his younger siblings. “I don’t know if it’s because they haven’t found him yet.”

She said Kavion is an outgoing kid who “loved to play basketball” and had just made the team at the Lower East Side Preparatory School, where he’s a freshman.

Divers began searching Friday but had to stop because of inclement weather. They resumed their search when the rain stopped on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Foul play is not suspected, cops said.

Glover said she’s staying by the river.

“I’m just very uneasy at this point, but I have to be here, just trying to keep the faith and staying out here to see if they recover him,” she said.

The body of a 13-year-old boy who went missing in the East River off Manhattan last week was pulled from the water Friday, and his stricken mother fainted when she saw her dead son, police sources told The Post.

Kavion Brown Godfrey was last seen in the water near East Sixth Street and FDR Drive on the afternoon of Oct. 20 before he was swept away, witnesses told police.

His body was pulled out of the water near the South Street Seaport on Friday, and his parents, Laquana Badger Godfrey and Donnell Godfrey, identified his body, sources said.

His mom was so distressed by the sight that she fainted, sources said.

Godfrey’s body surfaced around East 10th Street before floating down to Wall and South streets, sources said.

The dead teenager was removed from the water at Pier 17, sources said.

The family announced yesterday, alongside their lawyer, that they would be looking into suing the city Department of Education after their son ended up in the river.

He had been downtown with his coach to attend a soccer game for Lower East Side Prep, where he played basketball. His parents said the coach had encouraged the basketball team to come support the soccer kids because there was no basketball practice that day.

The family’s lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, said the DOE potentially had a “responsibility” to look after the teenager and that that duty was “breached.”

The Post has reached out to the DOE for comment.

Since the teen’s disappearance, the NYPD used drones and scuba and aviation teams to try to find Godfrey, hoping alongside the parents that he would be found alive.

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- The search and rescue mission for a 6-year-old girl swept away by the Chester Creek in Delaware County resumed Sunday morning, with crews using a myriad of tools to try and find the missing child.

City of Chester Mayor Stefan Roots said during a press conference Sunday that the search for the young girl, identified by family as Lin'Ajah Brooker, remains "aggressive," and that local rescue crews and the U.S. Coast Guard are using every resource at their disposal to find her.

"We are going to make every attempt that we can to get closure for the family by finding the young lady who is in the creek," Roots said.

Six-year-old first reported in the water

On Saturday, March 23, a 911 call reported that a child had fallen into the water around 8 p.m. Initial reports indicated that two girls were playing by the water when Brooker slipped on mud and fell into the creek.

The Chester Bureau of Fire began a search and rescue operation in connection with Delaware County's water rescue team. On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard also had a small boat and helicopter searching the area.

Local crews suspended their search around 10:30 p.m. and resumed around 8 a.m. Sunday, though Coast Guard crews continued their search efforts through the night, according to Chester Fire Commissioner John-Paul Shirley.

Crews using "every asset" to find Lin'Ajah

Sunday morning, Shirley outlined some more of the tactics rescue teams are using to find Brooker.

Smaller boats are being deployed along the creek, from where Brooker fell into the water to the mouth of the Delaware River. Then on the Delaware River, larger boats are being used to search on both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania sides.

"Every asset that we have at our disposal, we're going to be using," Shirley said.

Coast Guard helicopters are flying over the creek, as well as drones. Shirley said rescue crews are searching along all of the banks from where Lin'Ajah entered the water to the Delaware River, and firefighters are using a brand new, underwater drone.

"It's remote operated. It has a camera on it. It allows us to basically see underwater without us having to put divers in the water, which is anytime you put divers under water, it's a dangerous situation," Shirley said. Shirley and Roots went on to explain that the underwater drone was recently acquired thanks to a $250,000 grant through the police department.

Saturday night, Delaware County emergency services brought down light towers to help search crews with visibility. Crews also launched drones with infrared and thermal imaging technology to help with the night search.

Conditions complicating the search

On Saturday, more than two inches of rain fell in Chester, complicating the search for Brooker.

"It's very rapid currents. There's a lot of debris in the water which poses a potential hazard to our responders, but they've been trained to kind of deal with those situations," Shirley said.

On Sunday morning, Shirley said conditions were much better for their search. The flow of the river has reduced, there's less debris and depth had dropped by about five feet. However, crews are still being challenged by the cold conditions.

"We're still in search and rescue mode, but obviously as the time goes on, it's going to transition. We're not going to really call it a recovery mission until about 24 hours," Shirley said Sunday.
