OAKLAND -- An armed robbery suspect whose selfie taken with the victim's stolen cellphone camera last August led to police identifying him has been formally charged after being arrested in Las Vegas, authorities said Tuesday.

Raymond A. Smith Jr., 18, is charged with one count of second-degree armed robbery, authorities said.

He awaits extradition from Las Vegas where he was being held on a probation violation since February after showing up at his probation agent's office under the influence of drugs, authorities said.

Police said Smith was one of two men who robbed a 42-year-old woman at gunpoint Aug. 19, taking her cellphone, a gold necklace and other items while she was walking her dog in the 2100 block of East 28th Street.

After the robbery police say Smith took a picture of himself on the cellphone. The woman saw it while looking at her computer iCloud account the next day and turned it over to police.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For nearly a week, police say people in different parts of town have been terrorized by a group of young men after cash or whatever they have on them.

Police say at least seven people were held up at gunpoint in four different robberies, and say two of them were in Midtown.

Saturday night, a couple was robbed in the Parking Lot of the P & H cafe on Madison, and Tuesday night, another couple was robbed near Madison and Belvedere after leaving a Mexican restaurant.

A couple hours later, police say a husband and wife were robbed while they were closing up their grocery store in the 1600 hundred block of Lauderdale in South Memphis.

Wednesday night, a man was robbed while walking along Jackson Avenue to the Rainbow Inn.

“I was walking through their group and that’s when they knocked me down and robbed me,” said Charles Graham.

In each robbery the victims said they were held up by a group of three to six young men carrying guns and some wearing bandanas.

Shortly after the robbery on Jackson, police arrested Jackson Michael Williams, Cavious Watkins and Derrick Wilkins.

Man gets 18 years for armed robbery of two VCU students

RICHMOND – A 21-year-old man was sentenced today to 18 years in prison for breaking into the apartment of two Virginia Commonwealth University students, robbing them at gunpoint and forcing them to go to an ATM machine and get more cash.

Dominique A. Hackley was 20 at the time of the crime, which occurred Sept. 23 at 5:38 a.m. at Park Plaza at Belvidere, a large apartment building in the 500 block of West Franklin Street, just across Belvidere Street from Monroe Park, that caters to VCU students.

Prosecutor Caitlin R. Kelly called for Richmond Circuit Judge Clarence N. Jenkins Jr. to impose a stiff sentence, saying students who come to Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth, the University of Richmond and Virginia Union University deserve to feel safe.

“The predators who introduce violence into the college community need to face severe consequences,” Kelly said.

Hackley apologized before he was sentenced for his convictions on nine charges, including robbery, abduction, burglary and four counts of use of a firearm in a felony.

“My intentions were never this,” Hackley said. “I don’t blame anyone but myself.”

Kelly said Hackley broke into the apartment building, then bluffed the residents of a locked second-floor unit into thinking they knew him. The residents, believing a friend had come to visit them, opened their apartment door, and Hackley forced his way inside.

Kelly said Hackley first punched one of the victims and shoved him to the floor before producing a handgun and ordering them to give him money. When they came up with only $12, he forced them at gunpoint to walk to a 7-Eleven in the 200 block of West Main Street, where one victim withdrew $160 from an automatic teller machine and give it to Hackley, who fled on foot.

HOUSTON -

Convenience store workers in north Houston are on alert after two employees were robbed at gunpoint in a span of two weeks.

Both incidents were caught on the stores' surveillance cameras. The videos have been turned over to the Houston Police Department.

The first incident happened at the Patton Corner Food Store located on Patton Street near the North Freeway. Ali Mohaamed says he was restocking bagged ice when a man with a gun came into the store. The gunman made his way to the cash register, where he stole hundreds of dollars and lottery tickets.

The second incident happened on Tuesday at a Chevron gas station on Cavalcade. A man went into the store, where he asked to buy a pack of cigarettes. After getting his change from the cashier, the man jumped the counter and forced the cashier to the floor at gunpoint.

The gunman grabbed money from the register and took the cashier's wallet before leaving the property with an accomplice.

The victims in both incidents have viewed the surveillance videos and believe the same gunman is responsible for both crimes.
