OMAHA, Neb. -- The Nebraska Humane Society said an Omaha woman has been charged with felony animal cruelty after her dog was found frozen to death in her back yard.

NHS investigators and Omaha police were called to a home near 41st Street and Curtis Avenue on Feb. 1. on an anonymous tip. They said they found a dead German shepherd frozen to the floor of a plastic kennel. A necropsy was conducted and it was determined the dog died of starvation and hypothermia, investigators said.

“The animal control officers literally had to dismantle the plastic dog house and bring the dog out to the shelter while still stuck to floor of dog house (kennel),” said Mark Langan with NHS.

NHS said the investigation found the dog had been chained in the back yard for up to two weeks with no food, water or adequate shelter.

The dog’s owner, Yolonda Glover, 32, was arrested Friday morning on a felony warrant. Police said she told them she didn’t know the dog had been dead, but told them she hadn’t checked on the dog for two weeks.

Court documents indicated Glover knew her dog had been sick for about three weeks, but said she didn’t take the dog to the veterinarian because she didn’t have any money.

The court documents also showed Glover contacted NHS the day after the dog was removed, to request private cremation services for the dog.

“If she had money to request private cremation services for the dog, she probably had money to feed the dog,” Langan said.

If convicted of felony animal cruelty, Glover could face up to five years in jail. She’s being held on a $10.000 bond.
