Two women were attacked in their homes at the weekend in separate invasions that police described as sexually motivated.

In the first, a Hastings woman was attacked at an address in Southland Rd about midnight on Friday. A man, wielding a knife and wearing a balaclava, approached the woman and demanded her cash, Pin number and cellphone.

The man then sexually assaulted her before leaving the house. Money was withdrawn from the woman's account about five minutes later at an ATM on Heretaunga St.

The attacker was a Maori or Pacific Islander aged 25 to early 30s, 1.7 metres (5ft 7in) tall, with a stocky build and facial hair around his mouth.

In the second home invasion, which also happened about midnight on Friday, a man entered a woman's home in De Lautour R

d in Gisborne through an unlocked door and attacke
d her.

Police described the attack as sexually motivated, though the woman managed to escape without injury.

The woman described the attacker as Maori in his mid-twenties, with a slim build, about 1.65 metres tall, wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.
