Police: Old Joke Prompted Murder

William Berkeyheiser was shot and killed as he answered the front door of his Washington Crossing home on Easter Sunday.

April 25, 2005 --Police made an arrest and have apparently gotten a confession for an Easter Sunday murder in Bucks County. It all apparently stemmed from a 7-year-old joke.

Sixty-two-year-old William Berkeyheiser was shot dead on Easter Sunday, as he answered the door at his Washington Crossing home.

Sunday night at an apartment complex in Northeast Philadelphia. That man has apparently told authorities an incredible tale of why and
r
how this deadly murder plot unfolded.

At a news conference Monday morning, Bucks County District Attorney D
iane Gibbons announced the arrest of 29-year-old Stanhope Douglas. She said he confessed to the murder of Berkeyheiser after a standoff at his home on Woodhaven Road in Northeast Philadelphia Sunday night.

Diane Gibbons/Bucks Co. D.A.: "He indicated that the reason he killed Mr. Berkeyheiser was that he claimed Mr. Berkeyheiser had told a joke which he considered to be offensive because it had some kind of racial overtones." (Oh yeah, that justifies murder.)

Douglas had worked as a maintenance man at the Baptist home where Berkeyheiser had been the director of plant operations in 1998. Douglas wouldn't elaborate on the joke, but apparently held a grudge against Berkeyheiser all this time.

He even hired a private investigator to locate Berkeyheiser's Washington Crossing home according to investigators. Douglas stopped at a convenience store nea
r B
erkeyheiser's home on Easter Sunday night to ask for directions.

It was the security video of Douglas at the store that led to the ti
p call that finally led police to their man.

Viola Berkeyheiser/victim's wife: "I don't know how I feel. It's just a tremendous relief. I just want to thank the community. I want to thank the press for everything they've done."

Douglas' arraignment was continuing at noon.

Stanford Douglas Jr., 29 (below left) is charged with first-degree murder and is being held with no bail. Bucks County District Attorney Diane Gibbons said Douglas has confessed to the killing of Berkeyheiser.

Gibbons said Douglas claimed that Berkeyheiser made a racial joke in
1998 when the two worked together at a nursing home and that he had been thinking about killing Berkeyheiser since.

Berkeyheiser's wife said her husband never would have made a joke like that because she is a minority, herself. Investigators said that last month Douglas paid a private detective $150 to locate Berkeyheiser, who had recently retired as a maintenance supervisor at Holy Redeemer Hospital.

According to investigators, they might never have caught Douglas without an enhanced photo from a surveillance video at a convenience store. They said two people called in saying they knew somebody who resembled the man in the picture.

Police said they initially wanted to talk to Douglas and another man inside the Franklin Square Apartment Complex at Woodhaven and Knights Roads in Philadelphia Sunday about other crime
, bu
t the men barricaded themselves inside. Finally, around 11:15 pm. Sunday, police escorted them out of the complex in handcuffs.

Investigators found a fully-loaded .380 B
ersa, hidden in a bedroom of Douglas' house. They also confiscated his vehicle, which is believed to be the one used in the killing.

Douglas' next court hearing was scheduled for May 2.

Shocking motive in the Easter murder of a Bucks County, Robin Rieger reports.
Arrest Made In Easter Murder

William Berkeyheiser Was Gunned Down At His Door

Apr 25, 2005 10:32 pm US/Eastern
PHILADELPHIA (AP) A man told authorities he gunned down a former co-worker on Easter night because he overheard the victim telling a racist joke seven years ago, a prosecutor said Monday.

Stanford A. Douglas Jr., 29, of Philadelphia, was arrested late Sunday after a two-hour standoff with Philadelphia police during which he threatened to kill officers. He was charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses and was ordered held without bail.

William Berkeyheiser, 62, was shot to death on March 27 after he opened the front door of his home in Washington Crossing, an affluent suburban neighborhood about 20 miles north of Ph

iladelphia.

The alleged motive for the shoo
ting goes back to 1998, when Berkeyheiser and Douglas worked at a Northeast Philadelphia nursing home, Bucks County District Attorney Diane Gibbons said Monday.

Douglas, who is black, told investigators he had thought about killing Berkeyheiser ever since he overheard Berkeyheiser, who is white, tell someone a joke with racial overtones in 1998, Gibbons said. Douglas refused to recount for detectives the joke that he said made him so incensed, according to court documents.

The two men worked in The Baptist Home of Philadelphia during part of 1998, Douglas as a maintenance man and Berkeyheiser as an executive in plant operations, she said. A phone message seeking comment from the home was not immediately returned.

Douglas was recently employed as a truck driver.

They didn't even know each other, Gibbons said. (Douglas) asked investigators during questioning what kind of a guy (Berkeyheiser) was.

The victim's wife, Viol
a Be
rkeyheiser, is of Asian decent. She said Monday th
at she was certain her husband would never have told a racist joke.

He was a very funny, very witty man, and he did make people laugh, she said. But he would never, never, never have done anything like that. I'm a minority ... that just wasn't who he was.

William Berkeyheiser was shot after answering the door shortly after he and his wife finished dinner on the rainy Easter evening, Gibbons said.

After he opened the door, Mrs. Berkeyheiser heard (her husband) say, 'Should I know you?' and then offer to let the person in out of the rain, Gibbons said. Then she heard the shots.

Berkeyheiser died on his front porch. His wife ran to his aid and was unable to identify the killer or the car speeding away, Gibbons said.

Detectives on Monday searched the apartment that Douglas shared with his father and recovered a loaded .380-caliber Bersa semiautomatic handgun and ammunition of the same type that killed Berkeyheise
r, accor
ding to court documents.

Dougl
as hired a private investigator last month to find Berkeyheiser's address, Gibbons said. Police were seeking to interview investigators with the firm, A-Plus Investigations in Levittown, she said.

There was no telephone or address listing for the agency, and no one could be reached for comment Monday by The Associated Press.

Douglas was identified after authorities released a surveillance videotape from a Cumberland Farms convenience store near Berkeyheiser's home, where a clerk said the man on the tape asked for directions to his street just minutes before the killing.

Gibbons called the alleged motive the most bizarre she has encountered during her 22 years in law enforcement.
"t's completely senseless, and just horrifying, she said.

Viola Berkeyheiserwho has been flooded out of her home since shortly after her husband's murdersaid she was somewhat comforted after attending Douglas' brief arraignment before District Justice
Donald Nassh
orn in Newtown.

" neede
d to see him, she said. " needed to see what kind of a monster would do something like this for no reason.

It was unclear if Douglas had an attorney. He had no prior criminal record, Gibbons said.

Stanford Douglas Jr., 29, was arrested on murder charges Sunday after a two-hour standoff with police. He allegedly shot William Berkeyheiser, 62, three times in the chest and shoulder on March 27 at Berkeyheiser's suburban home.

Prosecutor Diane Gibbons said that Douglas told police he had been thinking about killing Berkeyheiser since 1998, when the two men worked at a Philadelphia nursing home and Berkeyheiser told a joke that offended Douglas.

The prosecutor would not say what the joke was.

The downside: This joke was clearly hurtful.

The upside: It was also clearly memorable.

The alleged motive for the shooting goes back to 1998, when both men worked at a Northeast Philadelphia nursing home, Douglas as a maintenance man and Berkeyheiser as an executive in plant operations.

Defense attorney Michael Applebaum said he believed Douglas wanted police to shoot him. He's been asking for the death penalty. He wants to die, Applebaum said after the outburst.

A doctor from Norristown State Hospital, where Douglas has been undergoing treatment, talked to him Monday for about 10 minu
tes as deputies restrained him on the courtroom floor.

The doctor and Bucks County detective John Knowles, who had arrested Douglas, were able to calm Douglas, Applebaum said.

"Here's a nice banana.. who wants a nice banana?

Knowles said that as he was restraining the suspect, Douglas told him: " should have killed you that night while I had the opportunity.

The detective said he thanked Douglas for not killing him, then told him, Respect your family, respect your fa

with dignity. Be a gentleman.

It's difficult to guess if any more-meaningless words such as these were ever uttered to a nigger before!!!
