Police had rape suspect, then let him go

Roberto Manuel Belnavis has been charged in connection with a series of sexual assaults in the Petite-Patrie and Plateau-Mont-Royal districts.

Police officers had been carrying the police sketch of the suspect as they conducted their patrols.

About a week ago, officers stopped a man who looked like the composite sketch and interviewed him, then let him go. The man was Belnavis.

Belnavis is fac
ng a total of seven charges in connection with the assaults:
four counts of armed sexual assault
two counts of sexual assault causing bodily harm
one count of armed robbery.

At least four
women between the ages of 16 and 25 were attacked in the Petite-Patrie district in July.

The suspect is also suspect
ed of assaulting a 25-year-old woman last week in the Plateau Mont-Royal district.
