SALINAS, Calif. - A Sacramento-based nonprofit group was called in to investigate the fatal shooting of a Salinas man by a police officer.

Protection & Advocacy Inc. was asked by the Civil Rights Coalition of Monterey County to look into the May 16 shooting of Robert Carrillo Jr., who was killed by a police officer after he stabbed a police dog.

The police department has launched its own investigation into the shooting. Police have said the officer shot Carrillo because he believed the man would also attack the dog's handler.

Family members said Carrillo had been suffering from depression since the death of his grandmother - who he shared a house with - in 1997.

&quot
I think it really affected him psychologically," said his second cousin, Cesar Flores. "After she died, he was depressed."

Officers with a search warrant moved in to arrest Carrillo on

May 16 and tried to coax him out of the house. When he
refused orders to come out, officers sent the police dog in to subdue him.

Carrillo then produced a large knife and began stabbing the dog, police said.
