A 35-year-old man was arrested on allegations he sexually assaulted an unconscious 14-year-old girl at his apartment in San Rafael, police said.

Aorrell Burrell Jr. was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of numerous felony sex crimes, including forcible rape and rape of an unconscious victim.

Burrell is being held in lieu of $1 million bail while the district attorney's office reviews the case.

The investigation began Monday after the girl's mother brought her to an emergency room. The girl told police she had been sexually assaulted earlier that day at an apartment on North Avenue in San Rafael.

The girl said she knew her attacker and identified him as Burrell, said San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher.

Investigators tracked Burrell down that night at a family member's residence on Lund Avenue in Hayward, where he was threatening to kill himself. Burrell ran out the back when police arrived, but he was arrested after a Hayward police dog chased him down and bit him in the leg.

Burrell was taken to a hospital for treatment of the bite wounds. He was released on Thursday and booked into jail.

"Due to the heinous nature of the crime, a bail enhancement was requested," Rohrbacher said.

Judge James Chou raised the bail to $1 million.

An initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
