Minneapolis teenager charged with second-degree murder

A Minneapolis teenager has been charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting one teen and the attempted second-degree murder of an adult man, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
Jomoy Lee, 17, has also been charged with two counts of felony possession of a firearm and one count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle. He made his first court appearance Monday afternoon and remains detained at the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center. Prosecutors are seeking to have Lee tried as an adult on all of these charges.
According to the petitions, on Sept. 14, Minneapolis police responded to reports of shots fired at a gas station located on Fremont Avenue North and Dowling Avenue North. Upon arrival, officers found that two victims, a 17-year-old male and a 19-year-old male, had been shot.
The 17-year-old victim was shot three times, while the 19-year-old victim was shot on the right side of his torso. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where the 17-year-old died, the petition states. Policed recovered 11 discharged cartridge casings from the scene and determined that one weapon fired seven rounds and another weapon fired four rounds.
On Sept. 17, Minneapolis police were conducting electronic surveillance and following Lee who was a suspect in the shooting. Officers were following Lee, the sole driver, in a Chevy Impala near the area of 7th Street and Lyndale Avenue North.
Two marked police cars attempted to stop Lee at the intersection of 7th Street and Lyndale Avenue North, but he fled and started driving through the North Loop in downtown Minneapolis, the petition states. During the car chase, Lee began throwing items out of the window: a cellphone and a gun, both recovered by police. Ballistics testing showed that the gun that Lee threw out of the car was used in the September 14 murder.
Lee continued to evade police by entering I-394 West, driving through barricades of the HOV lane, and heading in the wrong direction towards oncoming traffic. He proceeded to enter northbound of US Highway 169, eventually exiting the highway at Medicine Lake Road, the petition continues. Golden Valley police joined the chase and it ended when a Golden Valley squad car hit Lee’s Impala while in Plymouth.
Eventually, Lee was pulled from the car and detained, the petition says.
During a search of Lee’s car, officers found a .22 revolver.
