A shooting this week that left a young man dead may be linked to immigrant smuggling, Phoenix police said. The victim was a Hispanic man believed to be 18 or 19.

He was shot in the head, chest and leg Tuesday night near the Tempe-Phoenix city border, said Phoenix police Lt. Bill Hatounian. Police haven't released the victim's name.

Neighbors found the man bleeding in the front yard of a townhome after a confrontation with at least three men.

After multiple shots, witnesses told police they saw several people run from the home that police believe may have been a drop house.

Residents say the area is a haven for smug
lers, known as "coyotes."

"We don't know but it appears to be a coyote deal gone bad," Hatounian said. "Whether the shooters were trying to double-cross him or steal his
r
peo
le, we don't know."

Police are looking for three men but do not hav
e descriptions of them or their vehicles.
