'Soldier bigot' in wars

17may05

AUSTRALIA'S Jewish community is calling for Big Brother TV show contestant Nelson to be disciplined by the Army Reserve for his anti-semitic, "stupid" and "bigotted" remarks.

Nelson, an army reserve officer based at Enogerra barracks in Brisbane, called Big Brother "a J*w" after he refused to provide housemate Constance with a nose-ring after she lost hers in a game.
While he was given an official strike from Big Brother for making the remark, the Jewish community says he deserves more of a punishment as an army officer.

"It would be appropriate for the army to have a look at him, to be under review," Jeremy Jones, director of community affairs at the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council, said.

"We're aware there are go
ing to be ignorant bigots in the community, but thankfully they don't all go on national television and express their views
," he said.

The Army Reserve ruled out rebuking Nelson, saying his behaviour wouldn't be tolerated internally, but he made the remarks out of uniform.
