Officers kill gunman after rural pursuit

An unidentified man was killed Sunday morning after fleeing from law enforcement officers, setting fire to a barn and then turning his gun on officers.
The incident started at a rural Yolo County party in the 16000 block of County Road 92C, near County Road 20, where a Hispanic male allegedly shot two people, according to Rich Williams, detective sergeant with the Yolo County Sheriff's Department.
The two victims - Sophia Medina, 21, of Yolo County, and Victor Majia, 22, also of Yolo County - were flown by LifeFlight helicopter to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Both victims
re listed in critical but stable condition, Williams said.
Bystanders at the party called 911 to report the shooting. The gunman fled the party in a white pickup truck about 11:40 a.m., but California
Highway Patrol officers spotted his tr
uck and tried to stop him, Williams said.
The suspect attempted to flee, he said, and a chase ensued. It started at Interstate 505 and Route 16 and ended when the driver crashed his truck in a ditch at County Roads 94B and 24, Williams said.
The man then fled to a relative's property in the 3300 block of County Road 24, taking refuge in a barn. While in the barn, the suspect shot six to eight horses and then set the barn on fire, Williams said. Upon exiting the barn, he fired several shots at officers, Williams said.
Officers returned fire, killing the man, Williams said. No officers were injured in the altercation.
The suspect's identity will be released as soon as a positive identification is made, he said.
The incident is
under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Yolo County Sheriff's Department, Yolo District Attorney's Office, the Davis Police Department and the West Sacramento Police Department.<
