FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A man accused of punching a puppy and spitting on a detective was being held without bond at a Broward County jail Friday.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said 20-year-old Kevon Gayle repeatedly punched a black pit bull puppy and then threw the young dog about 10 feet. The alleged incident occurred Thursday shortly before 4 p.m. in the 8200 block of Northwest 88th Avenue in Tamarac.

When the two detectives who claimed to witness the incident asked Gayle why he hit the puppy, he responded with expletives and attempted to walk away, according to the BSO. Gayle violently resisted arrest and spit in
the face of one of the arresting detectives while Gayle was being placed in the back seat of a patrol car, according to the BSO.
The detective suffered minor abrasions.

The puppy was limping after the incident and taken to Coral Springs Animal Hospital for treatment.

Gayle is charged with several counts, including battery on a law enforcement officer and causing cruel pain and suffering to an animal.
