Teen son of Klansman wins vote for GOP post

Did we witness the birth of a mini David Duke in West Palm Beach Tuesday night?

Derek Black, the 19-year-old son of former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard Don Black who's married to the former wife of white supremacist politician David Duke, won his first election Tuesday.

He's now a Republican Party committeeman. His job is primarily to ensure that voters in District 29, which runs alongside Southern Boulevard east of Dixie, vote Republican.

Tuesday's contest wasn't even a squeaker: Derek Black won with 58 percent of the votes, 167 out of 287. His opponent was Eduardo Burkhart, 47. Burkhart, w
ho's deaf, made news last year when Gov. Charlie Crist used Burkhart's attempts to sell his condo on Flagler as a prop to illustrate why lower property taxes were needed.

Young Derek Black, meanwhile, is still living at his family's home on Lakeland Drive, according to records. Attempts to reach Derek Black were unsuccessful.

It is from that location that Don Black, his dad, produces a racist Web site, www.stormfront.org. Several entries in blogs on the site Wednesdays were stuffed with ethnic slurs directed at blacks, Jewish people and Hispanics.

Derek Black couldn't be reached Wednesday. But he's also known in this country's white supremacist crowd.

In 2001, Derek was just 12 when USA Today highlighted his work at creating a children's page on stormfront.org. That page included white supremacist songs, bulletin boards and anti-Martin Luther Koon bedtime stories. Don Black, the story pointed out, keeps a photo of his son in a Confederate uniform on his des
k.

The teenage boy, who sports flaming red hair, is currently listed as a radio commentator on his dad's site.

Derek Black quietly campaigned, visiting many of the district's historic homes. Residents on his block include a single lesbian on one side, and a gay couple on the other. One of the two men is black.

"His mom (Chloe) took him around, introducing him to everyone," said one resident who asked that her name not be used.

Chloe Black, by the way, is none other than the former wife of Duke, maybe the best known white supremacist of the past 30 years. He ran for several public offices in Louisiana, at times coming close to getting elected. He ran both as a Republican and a Democrat.

Republican leaders here, meanwhile, said they never heard of Derek Black's name until Page 2.1 called them.

"I assume he qualified to run for the seat and he was elected," said local GOP boss Sid Dinerstein. http://www.geocities.com/raspstar
b/smilies/jude.jpg "Anybody in this country can join a party and run for a position on that party. He is entitled to be seated if he acts according to our constitution."

Added Dinerstein, who's Jewish: "Hopefully, he left that past behind. He shouldn't forget that this party was formed by abolitionists."

Allen West, a black Republican running for Congress in the south part of the county, says he'll "have a talk" with Black at the first meeting of the local GOP in September.

"If he won't judge me for my character instead of my race, I'll ask to please not support me in any way," West said.

White Civil Rights Activists Receive Death Threats

December 3, 2008

Stormfront owner Don Black and family receive death threats over son’s political aspirations.

From European Americans United

We’ve all heard of Stormfront, the grand daddy of all white nationalist message boards. Whether you approve of it or hate it, you’ve probably heard about it. Proprietor Don Black’s son, 19 year old Derek, decided to put his online activism into real world practice by running for public office; specifically a seat on the Palm Beach County’s Republican Executive Committee. Well, lo and behold he won and was successfully elected on Tuesday August 26th, 2008 to be a local Republican Party committeeman in the Palm Beach area. His job is to essentially ensure that voters in District 29 vote Republican. Winning 58 percent of the votes, 167 out of 287 against his opponent Ed Burkhart, Derek’s victory was a ’sure thing.’

But not for long. Under the authority of GOP boss Sid Dinerstein the local GOP has moved to kick Derek Black out. Something to do with his “viewsâ┚¬ , we’re sure. Egging on the effort to remove Derek Black’s election Sid Dinerstein is making a mockery of free and fair elections.

Dinerstein says candidates are required to sign an ”’oath of loyalty’ in June, and apparently Derek Black didn’t do so, and as far as Dinerstein is concerned, Ed Burkhart won. And so on Thursday August 28th, Dinerstein managed to have Derek Black kicked off the committee. But here’s the rub: Derek Black says: “My understanding is that the oath had to be signed by the first meeting of the new committeemen, and that’s by December 1st. They’re obviously looking for a way to keep me out, but I won’t let that happenâ┚¬ .Derek Black says “of courseâ┚¬ he will attend a meeting Wednesday for new members of Palm Beach County’s Republican Executive Committee. Never mind that the party chairman says Black’s “white supremacistâ┚¬ associations are not welcome and he will not be seated.

Well, someone else is also trying to keep Derek Black from moving forward, though no one is sure who it is. On or about December 1st the Black residence received four telephoned death threats. “Hey Don,â┚¬ one of the calls stated: “I just wanted to let you know we’ll have a scope trained on your son Wednesday. We have had for days.â┚¬ Police have noted the caller ID says 772-812-3827, which is a Vero Beach area wireless number.

Forget who Derek Black is. Forget his (entirely legal) views on race and nation. Forget about Stormfront or what you may even think of Stormfront. This is a civil rights infraction issue, and a serious one at that. Derek, who has a clean record, won a seat on the Republican Executive Committee fair and square. He has as much of a right to be there as anyone else. When threats of violence are used to prevent a person from exercising his political civil rights, it is not only unacceptable it sets a dangerous precedent. Coupled with political boss Sid Dinerstein’s** unrelated dismissal of Derek Black’s seat, such dismissals and such threats need to be investigated just as if similar dismissals and similar threats had been issued against a black man.

In fact, can you imagine the hue and cry if we were in reality discussing a black person who wished to “speak to members of the black communityâ┚¬ being dimissed after winning an election fair and square and then subsequently threatened with death by unknown persons? Can you say Michael Chertoff of Homeland Security fame?

For the record, European Americans United, without reservation, deplores and condemns these serious infractions against Derek Black’s civil rights and supports his rightful seat on the Palm Beach County’s Republican Executive Committee.

GOP snubs elected son of ex-KKK wizard

WEST PALM BEACH - The son of a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard is vowing a legal challenge after the Palm Beach County Republican Party refused Wednesday night to recognize his election to a local party post.

Derek Black, 19, won a little-noticed election for one of 111 county Republican Executive Committee seats in August. But the party called the election invalid because Black hadn't signed the Republican Party of Florida's loyalty oath before a June deadline.

Nine other would-be county GOP committee members were also disqualified for failing to sign the oath.

On a night when new committee members were sworn in, Black showed up at the meeting in a dark suit and tie with his long reddish hair flowing from beneath a black hat. One committee member suggested before the meeting that he remove the hat. Black didn't.

The son of former Klan Grand Wizard Don Black and a "close family friend" of former Klan Grand Wizard David Duke, Derek Black approached county Republican Chairman Sid Dinerstein
while Dinerstein was giving a television interview before the meeting and began debating the party's enforcement of the oath requirement.

He also challenged Dinerstein once the meeting began.

"Are you saying the party's rules override elections?" Black asked. After that, Black remained seated while new committee members stood up to be sworn in and Dinerstein was reelected without opposition as party chairman.

About an hour later, as party members plowed through procedural votes, Black stood up in front of the meeting and began addressing the crowd of about 200, but his words were inaudible to most because he did not have a microphone.

"You need to sit down or leave," Dinerstein told Black. Black opted for the latter.

Black later returned to the meeting and apologized for the disruption and said he planned to be involved in the party in the future.

While party officials said they were simply enforcing the rules in refusing to recognize Black's election, Dinerstein and others have also made it clear that Black isn't welcome in the local GOP.

Black, a community college student, helps engineer Internet radio broadcasts for Duke and for his father's Stormfront site, which promotes "White Pride World Wide." Duke voiced support for Black during a recent visit to West Palm Beach.

Even if he had signed the loyalty oath on time, Dinerstein has said Black's "white supremacist associations" violate a provision in the GOP oath that forbids activities "likely to injure the name of the Republican Party."

Black disputes the white supremacist accusation, describing himself as "a white person who is concerned about discrimination against white people."

White man sues for elected seat

Ex-Klan wizard's son sues Palm Beach County GOP for party seat

WEST PALM BEACH — The son of a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard on Wednesday sued the Palm Beach County Republican Party, asking a judge to force it to seat him on the party's executive committee. Although Derek Black captured roughly 60 percent of the votes in the August 2008 primary election, the party refused to let him assume the post. It claims he failed to sign a loyalty oath.

In the lawsuit filed in Palm Beach County Circuit Court, Black claims the party changed the deadline about when such oaths have to be signed but didn't publish the new rules.

Party leaders have said the rule change was publicized. Black has said he is not a white supremacist but rather "a white person who is concerned about discrimination against white people."

While Black's dispute with the GOP has centered on party rules and procedures, it has attracted larger attention because he's the son of former Grand Wizard Don Black and a close associate of former Klan leader David Duke.

Black has also engineered radio broadcasts for his father's "White Pride World Wide" Internet site and spoke at a 2008 conference promoting "the rights and heritage of European Americans."
