SEATTLE - A 14-year-old Federal Way boy on Thursday apologized for hanging a dog. He pled guilty in King County Juvenile Court to first degree animal cruelty charges.
"Animal cruelty is the tip of the iceberg,? said Judge Philip Hubbard Jr. ?I think the report indicated problems at home, things at school are very worrisome possibly indicate a disturbed young man."
The boy admitted that he took a neighbor?
s Spaniel mix to the woods and hung him from a tree.
Two other children found the dog, and used a lighter to burn the crude noose and free the spaniel. King County Animal Services examined the dog and later released it to its owner.
The 14-year-old was sentenced to 30 days of confinement, a year of community supervision and counseling.
Animal rights activists say it is a fair sentence.
"We'd like a stiffer penalty, but within the parameters of what they're allowed to do, but we think the judge took this as serious as he should have,? said Rita Morgan of Pasado?s Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary.
The 14-year-old was to leave juvenile detention Thursday and spend the rest of his sentence - about 12 days - in home confinement. The judge made it clear he believes the boy needs counseling and other help.
The 16-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl who rescued the dog were awarded a $1,000 check by Pasado's Safe Haven.
