Two killed in separate Shreveport shootings
Authorities don't know if year's first homicides are related.
January 6, 2005

Less than a week into the new year, Shreveport has seen its first homicides. Two local men were gunned down in two separate incidents early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The first occurred about 2:10 a.m. in the 4100 block of Joe Louis Street, where 28-year-old Anthony Rye of the 9100 block of Walker Road was shot at least two times while sitting in his car.

"The suspect reportedly drove up in a brown car, got out and approached Rye's vehicle," Shreveport police spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave said.

"The suspect then fired two or three shots, striking the victim in the head."

Though wounded, Rye drove away but lost control of his car and wrecked it in a ditch after traveling a short distance, Hargrave said. He was t

aken to LSU Hospital in Shreveport, where he was pronounced dead on
arrival.

The shooter was described as a black male who stands about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, has a shaved head and was wearing a white tank top, black shorts and black tennis shoes, Hargrave said.

A little more than two hours later, police found Oz Davis of the 6000 block of West 70th Street riddled with gunshot wounds to his torso in a parking lot at Woodlawn Terrace Apartments in the 4200 block of Greenwood Lane.

The 22-year-old was taken to LSU Hospital, where he died.

Davis had been shot at least six times, apparently at close range, said Shreveport police Capt. Frank Datcher of the department's violent crimes unit.

Detectives have not determined whether the two shootings are related, he said. "It's a possibility."
