A Person High School teacher and former Virginia Tech basketball player is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

Tyrone Khalil Outlaw of Roxboro was charged Wednesday with sexual activity with a student, according to the Person County Sheriff's Office.

The 28 year old attended the school, himself, graduating in 2013, then starting as a teacher in August.

"Really cool dude always nice always friendly," Person High School student said.

Some students perceived Outlaw in this way before his arrest.

"It was a shock for sure, it took the whole school by surprise, took the whole town by surprise, in my opinion," student said.

The lead investigator in the case said Person High School notified the Sheriff's Office that the victim's father came to them with concerns about his daughter's texts with the suspect.

"Some of them were very explicit," Sergeant Kevin Morris, Lead investigator, Person County Sheriff's Office, said. "Be aware of your kids and where they are and there's nothing wrong with keeping tabs on them."

Another teacher was arrested this week for sex crimes against a student.

A 24-year-old social studies teacher at Southern Wayne High School is charged with taking indecent liberties with his student during a months-long relationship. He is currently being held on $8,000 bond.

According to the sheriff's office, the sexual encounter did not occur at school but at a private home.

Outlaw was jailed in the Person County Detention Center under a $30,000 secured bond.

The sheriff's office said Outlaw and the student both participated in their ongoing investigation.

Outlaw taught social studies and was an assistant basketball coach at Person.
